This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented and ambitious marine professional, with both
technical and policy experience, to join the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and
Technology (IMarEST) to lead the Institute’s policy and professional engagement activities
across existing and emerging maritime and marine areas – all in support of our vision of a
world where marine resources and activities are sustained, managed and developed for the
benefit of humanity.
The role will play a fundamental part in representing and managing the IMarEST’s relationships
and engagement with governments, intergovernmental organisations (including the International
Maritime Organisation (IMO)), non-governmental organisations and professional bodies, where the
IMarEST and its global membership help to provide policy makers with neutral, objective
technical advice.
The role will also lead the strategic development of the Institute’s professional engagement
activities, with a particular focus on engaging student and early career professionals;
championing of equality, diversity and inclusion in marine disciplines; helping marine
professionals to achieve professional registration; and encouraging and enabling the continuing
professional development (CPD) of IMarEST members, located in more than 120 countries and at
sea. This requires close collaboration with strategic partners around the world, as well as
working with Executive teams and committed volunteers from across the Institute.
The role ultimately will help to enhance the visibility of the IMarEST in support of its
mission to be the international organisation of choice for all concerned with marine resources
and activities, by providing professional leadership, upholding standards, and developing and
sharing knowledge based upon integrity, quality and fairness.
The ideal candidate will be a committed marine engineer or technologist with experience of
international representation or policy engagement in marine or maritime forums, and an
understanding of the public benefit that professional institutes and learned societies bring to
society and the environment.

Organisation (IMO) and other Inter-Governmental Organisations, policy and regulatory forums or
committees that the Institute is involved with, and at exhibitions or conferences worldwide, as
may be required by the Head of Technical, Policy & Content (TP&C).
- Lead on the development of, and support for, professional and policy campaigns, which
involve working with champions from the IMarEST membership, and external partners, to build
stakeholder communities and deliver engagement activities within regions and across sectors.
- Lead the strategic development of the Institute’s professional development activities. This
includes the uptake and use of the Institute’s professional development platform “IMarEST Echo”
by members for engaging in CPD, providing professional or technical input into content, events,
training and education programmes being developed by the Institute and its partners.
- Work independently and with appropriate IMarEST departments to identify and develop income
generating opportunities around policy and professional engagement activities.
- Through the engagement with and encouragement of IMarEST Branch and Special Interest Group
(SIG), support the continued growth in IMarEST Branch and SIG activities, and their potential
for professional engagement, technical knowledge sharing, membership growth and retention.
- Support the strategic development and delivery of the IMarEST’s Early Careers strategy.
