Countryside and Wildlife Team, The Quays, Baglan Energy Park, Briton Ferry, Neath (due to Covid-19 restrictions, currently home working with occasional use of the office space).

The Countryside and Wildlife Team is a multi-disciplinary team, leading on countryside access, biodiversity conservation, green infrastructure, project delivery and provision of ecological advice across Neath Port Talbot. With increasing recognition of the need for action for nature recovery, climate change and well-being, this is an exciting opportunity to facilitate positive change, by shaping and driving forwards the many initiatives and activities being undertaken by the team.

The post holder will have the responsibility for direct management of the four teams comprising the Countryside and Wildlife Team, whilst supporting wider functions of the team as a whole. We are looking for an experienced manager, with a sound understanding of the technical areas of expertise within the team, and the ability to motivate and support staff in meeting their full potential. The Team Leader post is the Council lead on biodiversity, countryside access and green infrastructure, and as such will need to have a genuine passion for the natural environment, whilst being able to influence and deliver the Council’s goals and ambitions in this field.

The team is increasingly taking a lead role in regional and multi-disciplinary initiatives, consequently we are looking for somebody with excellent leadership and collaboration skills, and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships to achieve common goals. We are also looking to maximise what can be done within the organisation to improve the environment and lives of Neath Port Talbot residents; to achieve this, the post holder will need to have the necessary people and negotiation skills to develop a clear understanding of, and influence, the many services and functions being delivered by the Council.

This is a challenging but rewarding role, leading a well-established and expanding team, responsible for a range of initiatives and projects. The post holder will need to be organised and highly self-motivated, with excellent report writing and budget management skills. Candidates must also have the ability to travel to site and to attend meetings as necessary.

The post requires a degree or equivalent in an environmental / countryside management or relevant specialist field.

Welsh language skills are desirable for the post holder.

Applications may be submitted in Welsh, applications submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.
