Senior Project Manager/Team Manager

This is a full time (37.5 hours per week) Grade 5 role with a salary between £34,000 and £39,000 (dependent on experience) plus benefits including 8% pension.

Due to the nature of the funding this post is a 22 month fixed term contract with the opportunity to extend or make permanent based on ability to secure additional work.

Westcountry Rivers Trust are a leading environmental Charity working with the Public, Private and Third Sectors delivering a range of initiatives, commercial or charitable activities to bring about positive change both in our rivers and on the landscapes they drain. We are looking for a highly motivated and organised Senior Project Manager/Team Manager to join our Land team. This role will lead and manage a team of farm advisors, working alongside the UST Senior Project Manager/Team Manager and reporting into the Head of Land Management. This role will also be required to contribute substantially to the development of new project work and new opportunities and for managing the delivery of that work. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our team to develop new areas of work and extend our project portfolio. There will be an opportunity to extend or make permanent the fixed term contract if the role holder is able to develop sufficient work to fund this role within WRT longer term.

Job Description:

The Senior Project Manager/Team Manager will work closely alongside the UST Senior Project Manager/Team Manager and will report into Hazel Kendell, Head of Land Management. This post will manage a team of farm advisors across various projects.


  • Team management of farm advisors including overseeing workload, monitoring progress of objectives and ensuring they are met, including responsibility for one to one’s and PDR’s.
  • To proactively identify opportunities and develop new areas of work which are in alignment with our Charity Plan.
  • To write high quality and effective bids and tenders to bring in new streams of income.
  • To build lasting and effective relationships and networks with external clients and businesses.
  • To manage multiple projects from inception to completion including implementation of project management systems and reporting.
  • To provide direction to project teams ensuring project objectives, targets and deadlines are met.
  • Project financial management, including budget planning, forecasting, reporting and ensuring the project adheres to the agreed budget.
  • To hold delegated authority for project expenditure in accordance with WRT policies and procedures.
  • To manage risks, issues and changes to the project, ensuring appropriate corrective action is taken to keep projects on track.
  • To actively promote the work of WRT and the Land Team.
  • Give presentations and talks to groups and businesses and set up promotional events and activity.
  • To be responsible for regular Quality Assurance.
  • To build relationships and engage teams internally to engage with project deliverables and to encourage innovation and ideas.
  • You may be asked to take on other relevant duties as appropriate.
  • This role is mainly desk based but will normally require travel to meetings.

Person specification.

Knowledge and Experience 

  • Demonstrable people management experience.
  • Experience of providing direction to a project team and ensuring objectives are met.
  • Experience of identifying and developing commercial opportunities and delivery including cross sector working.
  • Experience of writing bids and/or tenders.
  • Proven experience of successfully managing multiple complex projects, preferably within the environmental sector.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and extensive experience of implementing and maintaining, project management processes and systems.
  • Proven experience developing budgets for projects, managing actual costs against budgets and ensuring projects adhere to agreed budgets.
  • Practical experience of catchment management delivery and associated approaches.
  • Working knowledge of Agri Environment schemes, awareness of relevant Agricultural or Environmental policies.

Skills and Competencies

  • A proactive approach and evidence of using own initiative with effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to use information objectively and apply sound judgement in order to make decisions and provide feedback.
