About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for the right motivated individual to join our expanding, busy and experienced Marine Wildlife and Ornithology team.

APEM is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with a proven track record in project delivery and team management. Knowledge and an understanding of avian (or marine mammal) ecology including aspects of behaviour, breeding, migration and species distributions would be beneficial but not essential.

APEM’s Marine Wildlife and Ornithology team is currently undertaking projects worldwide, collecting high-resolution aerial digital data for environmental projects. The purpose of the role is two-fold; first to manage a team of specialists in data handling/analysis. The team analyse high resolution images, to accurately record the presence and identify species from wildlife surveys using specialist in-house software and are responsible for data handling. The position will have line management responsibility for senior team members engaged in quality assurance of data analysed by other Image Analysts. Experience of managing and manipulating large data sets and manipulation is essential. In addition the position shall be responsible for developing strategic client relationships and overseeing marine wildlife survey projects - reporting and business development for the consultancy work stream and managing internal interfaces with the remote sensing/data operations division.

The purpose of this role is to enhance and expand the Image Analysis function, influencing and shaping current work streams, and enabling expansion of the current customer base for Wildlife Surveys across the UK, Europe and worldwide. You will work closely with the Associate Director and Principal Consultants within the Ornithology, Remote Sensing and Data Operations departments, and the wider APEM team.

About you

The Image Analysis Principal will work with both the ornithology consultancy team and manage the Image Analysis team within Marine Wildlife Division. The primary role of the Principal is to be responsible for the data assets – handling, organisation and analysis of data gathered from aerial surveys of birds from a number of projects as well as managing resourcing within the team and tasks.

The role covers people and project management, application of technical services, and implementation of quality standards. The Image Analysis workforce includes Technical Specialists, Scientists and Graduates. You will work with the Associate Director to secure and manage a wide range of large scale ornithology consultancy projects, sharing responsibility for innovative business development of APEM’s data assets and services. You will also be responsible for line managing Consultants and taking responsibility for strategic client relationships/projects.

  • Adept at analysing data and information to identify and achieve improvement opportunities
  • Degree in computer science, information technology, systems engineering or other related field
  • Health, Safety and Quality training
  • Technical competence – data management-handling/data quality/IT/database administration /GIS
