About you

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate with outstanding knowledge of science policy and excellent communication skills seeking to further develop their career in science policy.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with relevant experience in policy who is looking for an interesting and varied managerial role. Reporting to the Head of External Affairs, the Policy Manager will take overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of policy work but will also work closely with the rest of the external affairs team.

About the role

You will have a sound understanding of the policy landscape to assist the BES in promoting the importance of ecological science to policymakers and to promote the importance of engaging in policy-making to members of the society. This will require a relevant science (e.g. ecology, environmental, biological or natural science) degree. You will be managing two London based Policy Officers and Officers based in Scotland and Ireland, who are new in post, therefore we are looking for someone with the skills to lead a new team.

Core duties will include:

  • Advise the Society and its policy committee on key areas of policy activity to develop and implement a programme of policy activities that delivers the BES strategic aims
  • Manage and lead a geographically diverse team to deliver policy work across the devolved nations and internationally
  • Promote the importance of ecological science to policy and decision makers at all levels building strong relationships with key stakeholders
  • Build capacity for policy work across the society and its membership
