Opportunity for a Principal Ecologist

Due to continued success Greenspace Ecological Solutions (GES) are looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to join the team and assist with the management and mentoring of our Ecology Team, aid in project delivery and work with the Company Directors on the continued success and development of the Company.

GES are currently seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to join the team. The chosen candidate would report into Company Directors and be the lead for the ecology team.

Principal Ecologist Role

Working as part of the management team you will assist with business development, with the role serving as a key focal point and responsibilities extending to line management and the support and mentoring of the more junior members of the team.

Responsibilities include;

  • Overseeing the project management and delivery across the ecology team;
  • Working as part of the management team and assist with business development;
  • Undertaking, managing and co-ordinating habitat and protective species surveys, ecological mitigation strategies and general client advise across a broad range of disciplines;
  • Working as Lead Ecologist on a variety of schemes across a range of sectors, undertaking surveys, managing projects and delivery, ensuring projects and services are delivered to a high standard in a timely and cost-effective manner, managing deadlines and project budgets;
  • Managing the production of and give up to-date technical review of ecological reports/documents including; Survey Reports, Management Plans, European Protected Species licences and chapters of BREEAM, HRA’s, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA, EcIA) and Net Gain;
  • Establishing and maintaining links with new and existing clients, contractors, governing bodies and third parties and providing up to date, pragmatic technical advice;
  • Production of tenders and the reviewing of project budgets;
  • Co-Ordinating the mentoring and training of more junior members of the team and at times conduct training sessions both in-house and externally;
  • Assisting with Company Health & Safety and monitor delivery;
  • Assisting with workflow allocation and project financials, working with admin, accounts and operations team;
  • Representing the Company at meetings, functions, events and give presentations when necessary;

Qualifications, Key Attributes and Personal Specification

To be successful in this role we are looking for applications from experienced professionals who have worked in a similar role within ecological consultancy. Applicants must have; strong project management, surveying, technical knowledge and communication skills, be detail orientated, commercially aware, motivated and have the ability to mentor and manage others.

For Principal Ecologist Role, at minimum you must;

  • Have experience of working within UK ecological consultancy with at least 4 years working at Senior level or above
  • Have consultancy-based experience of people management
  • Have experience in the development and line management of a team of ecologists
  • Have experience in tendering across various sectors
  • Have experience of actively growing and maintaining a client base
  • Be commercially aware, have great presentation skills and be detail orientated
  • Have experience of handling budgets across projects and managing/reviewing team workflows
  • Have ability to communicate effectively and support clients and team members in a clear, concise, professional manor
  • Have detailed working knowledge of UK planning policy and environmental / wildlife legislation
  • Have proven experience of managing ecological input on mid to large-scale residential, commercial and infrastructure schemes
  • Have excellent project management skills with a demonstrative ability to plan and deliver works in line with budgets and programme deadline
  • Have experience of conducting an array of EIA, habitat and protective species surveys to a high standard and have detailed knowledge of the associated survey techniques
  • Have experience of writing and providing detailed technical review across a range of ecological and technical reports, EPS licence applications, HRA, BREEAM, Net Gain etc
  • Have a pro-active approach to learning and knowledge sharing

Qualification, Membership and Licence Requirements

  • A Degree and/or a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline
  • At least 2 Natural England EPS licence/s and/or a technical specialism used within ecological consultancy
  • Full CIEEM membership (with chartered status or working towards)
  • Full Driving licence for UK use and access to a vehicle for work use

The Package

Salary: £40,000- £45,000 depending on experience.

Location: The role is offered as both office or home based (or a mix of both if preferred). Please specify your preference when applying. For Home-Based working you must be based within Kent, East Sussex, or Surrey. Our office is located 15 mins outside Tunbridge Wells, on the Kent and East Sussex border, with our dominant work area being that of Kent, Sussex, Surrey and occasionally further afield.

Hours: This role is full time, but we are open to flexible working requests for the right candidate. Some out-of-office hours working will be required to aid with the prevision surveys and meetings.
