Closing date: Friday, 2nd October 2020   7 days left

We are seeking a social media officer to join our small team here at Flight Free UK. The role is part time (2 days per week/14 working hours, with a total salary of £7,200 for the year) and will involve overseeing our social media presence as well as helping out with other admin tasks.

Please note, this is a non-payroll position, i.e. you will need to be registered as self-employed and will be responsible for your own tax. The role is fixed for a year, with the potential to extend beyond one year, and increase in hours, dependent on funding.

The organisation

Flight Free UK is an active and well-regarded campaign that has made a real splash on the climate and behaviour change scene since launching in February 2019. We run the ‘flight free year’ pledge (currently flight free 2020) which asks people to take a year off flying in order to reduce their emissions and create a social shift away from aviation. We have attracted a lot of media and public interest, with over 6000 pledges in the first year, including from several high-profile travel writers and full-time adventurers.

The campaign’s main aims are to inform people of the climate impact of aviation and inspire them to travel by other means. While awareness of climate issues is rising, knowledge of the impact of flying remains low. Our campaign focuses on individuals making the pledge, with the year off providing a catalyst for longer-term behaviour change. As well as asking individuals to make the pledge, we provide commentary on industry and government policy, as well as challenge them where necessary.

There are many things that need to be done to reduce the amount we fly, and Flight Free UK works alongside other campaign groups and organisations to move towards our shared aims.

The team is led by the director Anna Hughes, the only full time member of staff. We have a vibrant team of volunteer interns which changes every few months. There is no office and as such we all work remotely, from home. We hold monthly video calls for the whole team.

The role

As social media officer, you will primarily be responsible for monitoring and updating our three social accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. You can find us here:

Other admin roles such as emailing and online research might be required from time to time.

We have established a strong online presence after only 18 months of campaigning, with 9,000+ followers across our platforms. Your main role will be developing content to engage these followers, as well as increasing our reach. Our aim is to double our social media following over a twelve-month period.

A key part of your role will be communicating with different audiences. We know that people use social platforms differently, and there is a difference in tone between Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. It will be your job to develop our messaging appropriate to each audience.

The role will also involve searching for groups who might be interested in hearing about our campaign, and connecting with them through our social media accounts.

You will be managed by the director Anna Hughes, who will provide training, guidance and ongoing support.

Your skills

You must have strong communication skills, with a high standard of written English. Successful candidates will have previous experience of running successful social media accounts. You will have an understanding of how to communicate with different audiences, for example across the platforms of Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

You must have good computer and internet literacy, and be able to access the internet from your home location.

You will be confident working remotely and able to carry out most of your work self-supervised.

Your interests

You will have a passion for the natural world and for taking action on the climate.
