Site Manager RSPB Forsinard Flows
Reference number: A0570820
Location: Forsinard Reserve
Salary starting at £30,817 to £34,471per annum
Hours: Full time

The Forsinard Flows National Nature Reserve consists of a huge expanse of designated blanket peatland, which is part of the largest terrestrial Special Area for Conservation in the UK. The 21,000+ha reserve also has areas of montane, woodland and other aquatic habitats important for a wide range of key species. However, following the controversial afforestation of large areas of the Flows country in the 1980's, we are now restoring large tracts of what is one of Europe's largest areas of peatland. We are removing this forestry and repairing the damage caused by ploughing to restore peatland habitats. Our restoration work is both highly novel, and very sensitive, and informs forestry policy on deep peat at a UK level. We therefore need to ensure that we seek the evidence that allows us to find the best approaches, and then be able to show that these approaches work, both for carbon and biodiversity, this is ground-breaking work! As well as a diverse range of habitats, the reserve holds good number of nationally rare breeding birds as well as a plethora of rare plants and other biodiversity.

We have invested significant efforts in building a collaborative research programme with multiple external partners, and this is now the most extensive of any on an RSPB reserve in the UK and includes some of the longest running peatland restoration monitoring schemes in the UK.

This post leads in the delivery of all the habitat restoration, links strongly with research carried out here as well as the day to day running of the reserve and manages a team of dedicated Wardens. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of strong people management skills, contract management and ideally knowledge of forestry management, peatland ecosystems and Highland estates.

This post will help with the running of the Field Centre, education facilities and a laboratory, in order to help facilitate the continuation and growth of research work in the Flow Country, under the auspices of the Flows Research Hub. You will be based at the Field Centre and will need to oversee some aspects of running the building. The reserve also has a small visitor centre and a fantastic eye-catching lookout tower on the blanket bog.

Forsinard Flows is set in Sutherland and Caithness in the Scottish Highlands. This is a beautiful part of the country and is very rural and fairly remote, being about 2.5 hours from our regional office in Inverness. The main land uses around the reserve are traditional highland sporting estates and forestry. Deer management is a key part of how we manage this site and some knowledge/experience of this would be an advantage. Being able to get on with our neighbours is important to us at this site and experience of community liaison would certainly help.
