The Job

This is an exciting opportunity to work at Rutland Water Nature Reserve, one of the UK’s best nature reserves. Based at its purpose-built Volunteer Training Centre. This will be suitable for someone who is looking for a hands on practical role. You will be working with volunteers and staff undertaking all elements of work on the reserve.

This will include the practical habitat management on the reserve, dealing with the public on walks and general wardening and recording and monitoring wildlife. The role will also have a key part to play in Birdfair which is held at Rutland Water Nature Reserve every August.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve (RWNR) is managed by Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust in partnership with Anglian Water and provides one of the most important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great Britain, regularly holding in excess of 20,000 waterfowl. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and internationally recognised as a globally important wetland site (Ramsar).

RWNR occupies an area of land and shallow water covering 1,000 acres. This involved the constructions of nine extensive lagoons comprising shallow water, snaking islands and wet marginal habitats to provide optimum conditions for wildlife and ensure it is undisturbed by water management of the reservoir.

Will have a passion for wildlife, enjoy working in a team and with volunteers. Be friendly, approachable, adaptable, communicative and enthusiastic. Applicants must have a full driving license and chainsaw certificate.

Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is a membership organisation, More than 16,000 members currently support the Trust’s work. The Trust manages 35 nature reserves covering 1,234 hectares (3,048 acres) of valuable wildlife habitats across Leicestershire and Rutland. From woodland to meadows, wetland to heaths, our nature reserves comprise some of the most important wildlife and geological sites in the counties.
