Smeeden Foreman is a multidisciplinary practice of ecologists and landscape architects based in Scotton, near Harrogate on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Established for over 25 years, we operate throughout the UK with work concentrated in the North and the Midlands.

We are seeking an experienced ecologist with specialism in bat work, to join our team. Relevant licences for bats (level 1 and 2), along with sound knowledge of mitigation and previous successful submission of development licences for this species are essential.

Experience in extended Phase 1 survey, report writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively would be an advantage. Other protected species survey licences and/or some relevant survey/mitigation experience, particularly in relation to badgers would be beneficial, but not essential.

Desired attributes:

  • Natural England bat licence (Level 1 and 2)
  • Have held a EPSM licence in respect to bats
  • Knowledge of wildlife legislation and the planning process
  • Experience of project management and preparing fee quotes
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in a related discipline
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Good computer skills

You will take the lead role in our bat work and contribute to all other areas of our ecological work. The range of work undertaken includes extended phase 1 habitat and protected species survey, formulation of mitigation proposals and habitat creation schemes. We are currently supervising projects under EPS licences for bats and great crested newts. Generally our outputs are in the form of technical reports for planning submission, but we also provide input to BREEAM Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments and EIAs. We work on a wide range of project types from industrial, business/retail parks, and residential developments to community projects and private dwellings.

We offer flexible working hours, a TOIL scheme, 25 days holiday per year (based on full time working), paid membership of CIEEM and a friendly office environment.

Please apply with a covering letter and CV, including your current salary and salary expectations.
