Background Information

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is an agency of the Scottish Government, and manages Scotland’s national forests.

Nationally, we are a major provider of outdoor recreation opportunities across Scotland. We manage a wide-ranging portfolio of visitor destinations including six Forest Parks. The work we do makes a significant contribution to the local and national visitor economy as well as ensuring our national forests deliver a wide range of social benefits.

Our South Region is diverse and comprises Tweed Valley & Galloway Forest Parks, Galloway Dark Sky Park, all of the 7stanes Mountain Bike centres, the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere and a land reclamation programme in the East Ayrshire coal area. It is an extremely busy and dynamic Region to live and work in.

The Visitor Services (VS) Team, which this role leads, is responsible for providing a high quality visitor experience through managing the recreational facilities and engagement with visitors, on-site business and event organisers and participants. Projects and partnerships often require working at pace with a clear vision of best outcomes for FLS and Scottish Government.

Travel & work throughout this Region will be a regular feature of the role and travel and work beyond the region will occasionally be required. This role can be based in Ae or Newton Stewart but will required to work from offices in Selkirk, Glentress, Castle Douglas and Straiton. Occasional overnight stays are likely to be necessary. Occasional weekend and evening work will be part of this role.

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

You will lead a team of professionals, planning and managing a quality visitor experience.

You will work with a wide range of stakeholders, such as visitors and communities, partner businesses, national VS teams and other regional staff colleagues. You will report directly to the Regional Manager to ensure integrated working with Land Management activities for the region and operate as part of the Leadership team for the South Region.


  • Lead, manage and develop a skilled, effective and efficient VS Team, inspiring and motivating staff to deliver results;
  • Work with partners and stakeholders at a senior level to develop and sustain the tourism offer in South Region;
  • Plan and implement evidence-based visitor experience strategies; ensuring our offer continues to improve and evolve;
  • Work as part of the South Region management team, sharing expertise and supporting colleagues in all functions;
  • Efficiently manage resources, programmes and budgets, preparing the Annual Financial Plan and reporting progress on expenditure and income;
  • Refine South Region’s visitor offer to deliver a contemporary visitor experience whist ensuring economic sustainability;
  • Ensure a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for visitors and staff, in line with legal requirements, industry best practice and corporate standards;
  • Lead forest tourism development projects in the South of Scotland, including Glentress Masterplan and 7stanes Borderlands Project;
  • Work with the National VS Manager and other Regional VS Managers to continue to evolve best practice.
