Senior Scientist

Salary: £28,649 to £35,811 dependent on experience + quarterly bonus + pension + 25 days holiday

Location: Buttershaw with the option to work flexibly across other YW sites and home

Purpose of the role

In this role you will be supporting the Technical specialists (River Resilience and WFD) in delivering a programme of environmental improvements to achieve our Outcome Delivery Incentives and contribute to our ‘Environment’ Big Goal.

You will drive delivery with our capital delivery team and framework partners to meet challenging efficiency targets and ensure that non-standard assets (e.g. fish passes) are maintained.

In addition, you will support strategic partnerships to outperform our regulatory commitments and deliver wider benefits to our customers and coordinate monitoring of our environmental assets to demonstrate those benefits. You will design and manage complex multi-disciplinary monitoring programmes to support the Drought Plan, Heavily Modified Water Bodies (WFD) programme, and other team regulatory commitments. You will also work with our research partners and innovation team to define and deliver R&D that supports the team’s objectives.

Key Accountabilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Supporting Technical Specialists (TS) for delivery of all fish passage and river restoration WINEP schemes. Support delivery of wider team environmental programme and work with Project Managers and partners to drive efficiencies
  • Scheme regulatory sign off and delivery of Performance Commitment (PC) contribution. Collation of evidence for Length of River Improved (clean water) and Working With Others PCs and reporting.
  • Supporting TS in developing and delivering schemes to outperform PCs
  • Supporting TS on partnership projects
  • Developing system to capture non-standard assets. Create maintenance plans, utilising 3rd parties where appropriate, to demonstrate that benefits are maintained. Responsible for delivery of these plans
  • Supporting TS in developing a monitoring framework to capture benefits across 6 Capitals
  • Designing and implement monitoring programme for relevant schemes
  • Providing evidence base to inform future investment. Work with manager and investment planning team to make a robust business plan submission
  • Ensuring that the Company maintains and develops relationships with key Regulators and NGOs
  • Attending and contribute to relevant conferences and events to support all role responsibilities

Knowledge and Skills Required

Essential:

  • Degree in a relevant discipline
  • Previous experience gained within the water or environmental regulation sectors
  • Experience of delivery of complex environmental schemes
  • Proven ability to develop excellent working relationships
  • Ability to design and coordinate environmental monitoring programmes and targeted investigations
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player with excellent organisational skills
  • Owns and has a positive attitude to solving problems
  • Able to communicate effectively through written communications, presentations and in meetings
  • Ability to coach others on technical issues

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Membership of appropriate professional body
  • Knowledge of the Asset Management cycle and Water Industry regulation
  • Published reports or papers in the field of environmental science, hydrology or hydraulics
  • Strong interpersonal skills, which are used to effectively influence and negotiate on environmental legislation matters at regional and national levels
  • Experience of delivering against challenging business targets

The role will be based in Bradford, however there is a network of Yorkshire Water offices across the region that can be utilised, and the nature of the role means working from site and home can be a common occurrence, and flexible working can be accommodated.
