About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a high-calibre, motivated and commercially-minded terrestrial ecologist to lead the expansion and management of our terrestrial ecology services and support this developing, expanding business area. Project work will likely include water company, development, energy, rail and highways infrastructure and capital schemes across the UK, as well as aspects around river and wetland restoration and various regulator investigations. As a Divisional Director you will be a member of the operational board of directors for APEM Limited, working with APEM’s wider senior management team with a remit to create and implement company strategy. You’ll work with internal and external teams liaising with clients, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, County Ecologists, Local Authority planning officers, and stakeholders.

You’ll provide authoritative ecological advice and innovative mitigation solutions/ enhancement considerations across a range of sites and schemes with varying levels of environmental and ecological sensitivities, including National and European designations. You’ll have a detailed understanding of Ecological Impact Assessments, planning regulations and nature conservation legislations. You’ll have a good knowledge of legislation and policy requirements associated with Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and other relevant designations.

A key part of this role is to ensure that this division is working towards APEM’s agreed strategic goals as agreed by the group board, as well as working closely with the other APEM divisions. You will work with the operational board of directors to manage the marketing, operations and business development of the division and expand APEM’s business and will have direct accountability for all Commercial, People and Technical drivers. You will have a keen interest in the subject area and have demonstrable experience in strategy, driving growth, business development and leadership and will have a solid understanding of general finance and budgeting. You will have the ability to build consensus and relationships among managers, clients and employees and possess excellent communication skills.

About you:

You will be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within project teams drawn from our regional offices. You will also have the drive and enthusiasm to expand and manage the current terrestrial ecology portfolio within APEM and to represent it externally. Thus, the ability to communicate effectively with clients in all sectors and a sense of pride in, and responsibility for your work are paramount for this position. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines.

This role would be ideal for a candidate with a background in terrestrial ecology. But what you will definitely have is business acumen and people management skills to be able to successfully lead the division.
