Independent Chair of Heat Trust’s Stakeholder Committee

Are you motivated by ensuring the needs of customers are placed at the heart of service delivery? Are you interested in the role that the energy sector has in decarbonising our heat supply? Do you have experience in independent governance?

Heat Trust is seeking to appoint an Independent Chair for its Stakeholder Committee. We would love to hear from you.

About us

Heat Trust is all about protecting heat network customers.

The UK energy sector is transforming. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has recommended that up to 1.5million homes should be connected to low-carbon heat networks by 2030. As we transform our energy system, it is vital that we do so in a manner that ensures the needs of customers are protected.

Heat Trust is an independent, non-profit consumer champion for the heat networks sector that holds the industry to account for the benefit of everyone involved.

We make sure customers enjoy the benefits of heating that is fit for the future by:

  • Applying strict customer service standards to heat suppliers, similar to those for traditional gas and electricity suppliers
  • Providing access to an independent dispute resolution service through the Energy Ombudsman
  • Working with suppliers to promote best practice, innovation and continuous improvement in customer service.

Consumer protection is essential to the long-term success of heat networks. We’re putting in place the foundations of regulations that will protect customers while allowing this exciting new industry to flourish. The work we are leading on has been recognised by BEIS, Scottish Government and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

About the role

Heat Trust is seeking to appoint an Independent Chair who will provide support and guidance to ensure the smooth running of its Stakeholder Committee.

Working closely with the Heat Trust Director, the Chair will ensure that the group functions properly, that all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out.

The Chair will have a key role in supporting a fledgling sector to drive forward improvements, prepare for future statutory regulation, and help ensure regulatory developments are proportionate and robust.

The role of an Independent Chair will ideally be held by a person with some knowledge and understanding of governance, customer protection, regulation and auditing.

In order to avoid any possible conflict of interest and to ensure that the post holder is, and is perceived to be, independent, applicants should not work directly within the heat network sector.

There will be up to four Committee meetings per year based in London. Preparation will also be required before/after, and on occasion, between meetings. On occasion, the Chair may be required to participate in meetings of the Heat Trust Board. A day-rate will be paid.

The appointment will be for a fixed term of two-years, with the ability to reappoint at the end of each two-year term up to a maximum of eight years.
