Who are we?

Twice named the nation’s ‘Best Food Retailer’ at the BBC Food & Farming Awards, Unicorn is a dynamic plant-based wholefood business with a difference. Working within an ethical framework, we operate a supermarket-sized 10,000sq.ft site close to the centre of Chorlton, South Manchester; packing, cooking and retailing wholefoods and fresh organic produce direct to the public, with an annual turnover of around £8 million. We are proud to serve a hugely diverse customer base, largely from our surrounding areas of Chorlton, Whalley Range, Old Trafford, Didsbury, Stretford, Hulme & Moss Side. We work to provide decent, well-sourced, affordable food for our local community.

What’s the role?

Being part of a workers co-operative is like no other job. Unicorn is owned and managed by its members – the workforce. Co-op membership involves working at various levels of the business, and includes significant amounts of shop floor work (serving, cleaning, re-stocking) as well as taking on specialist responsibilities such as warehouse, finance, IT or human resources. Unicorn operates with a flat management structure, and all co-op members (currently numbering around 70) are managers of the business, sharing equal responsibility for equal pay – there is no head office or store manager! Our working days offer plenty of variety, with a mixture of customer-facing, back-office and business development tasks.

Hours will involve early and late shifts with alternate weekend working.

Who are we looking for?

We need highly motivated, hard-working individuals to join our team. We are looking for prospective grocers; people who love good food, who enjoy working with the public and find satisfaction in providing great customer service. We need members who can work efficiently on the shop floor with a keen eye for detail, as well as the ability to step back and make well-informed business decisions within the framework of our values. Potential members need to be driven, keen to take on some management responsibilities, and willing to work hard as part of a large team. An understanding of basic business skills (and/or a willingness to learn) is a must.

In return, we’ll make use of your previous training and experience, but also challenge you to develop new skills. Co-operative working comes with its own challenges and is not for everyone, but being a member at Unicorn brings huge rewards. Pay and Benefits

There is a probationary period of 7 months from the start of employment, during which you will earn the co-op member rate of £12.00 per hour (£21,840 p.a. for 35 hrs) and receive a range of benefits including a 25% shop discount and support with bicycle maintenance costs. A further package of varied member benefits (once probationary period completed) include a health plan subscription, generous work-related training, personal (non-work-related) training allowance, quarterly bonus (dependent on business-wide productivity), increase in paid annual leave entitlement after 5 years of membership (on top of statutory allowance), paid special leave, enhanced maternity/paternity pay, and childcare benefit.
