The Role

The place of work is Northaw, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire 

This is a LIVE OUT position 

Support the Head Gardener in the upkeep of the Estate to the highest possible standard in the following areas:

  • Gardens: All formal and informal gardens, hedges and lawns
  • Grounds: Lodge, House and Yard, parkland, roadside hedges and trees
  • Roads, drives and paths: The main drive, entrance and terraces, lake and informal garden paths and internal roads
  • Employees: Working directly under the Head Gardener, you will benefit from their knowledge and experience - continued development is essential. Other Maydencroft employees will assist you as required.
  • Equipment: There is a broad range of garden, grounds, turf care and estate machinery, equipment and tools which the jobholder will help keep maintained and in good working order. Inspection sheets are filled out and faults must be reported.
  • Safety and Health: The jobholder will be responsible for maintaining the highest level of Health and Safety within their work. Reporting directly to the Head Gardener, or to the Line Manager.
  • From time to time in the winter months there may be time away from the Estate to help other Maydencroft project operations. 

The Place of Work

The Estate, approximately 3 miles north of Potters Bar, is a privately owned single land holding that covers approximately 320 acres. It is made up of 4 houses, mixed native woodland of varying ages, a lake and extensive parkland. A wood to the north makes up part of the Northaw Great Wood Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and careful management of the ancient Hornbeam coppice and lowland heath are required.

The mansion house, complete with underground tennis court, pool house and guest house (built 2010-2014) lies within the middle of the land holding. There are 3 year old fully irrigated formal gardens surrounding the mansion with extensive herbaceous borders and lawns, pleached trees, hedges and changes in levels. There is a recently restored Victorian ‘informal garden’ which is predominately made up of mature deciduous and coniferous specimen trees. The gardens are considered integral to the experience of the estate and the owner pays much attention to their upkeep.

The requirements:

  • Experience within the industry
  • Good plant knowledge
  • Horticulture qualification preferable
  • Professional and presentable demeanour with positive client liaison skills
  • Ability to manage in the Head Gardener’s absence
  • Working with individuals or a team
  • Full, clean driving licence
  • Experience of horticultural machinery
  • PA1, PA6 preferable 

The package

  • The place of work is Northaw, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire
  • This is a LIVE OUT position
  • Hours to be set by the jobholder and will vary depending on the season although typically based on 0700-1600 Monday to Friday as well as being on call for emergencies and to be at hand as and when required.
  • Annual leave is 20 days plus public holidays
  • £19,000 - £24,000 per year DOE
