The Business:

CPL Industries is a £150M turnover business trading in solid fuels, activated carbons and refractory products across the UK, Ireland, Europe, Africa, USA and Asia Pacific.

We are Europe’s leading manufacturer and supplier of domestic smokeless solid fuels, with a current product range that includes products such as Homefire Ecoal 50, Olive Briquettes and Supercharged Heat Logs that are targeted to have a reduced environmental impact through incorporation of biomass in their production.

We recognise the need to change and so are investing significantly in our R&D programme to develop the next generation of sustainable solid fuels. A number of development projects are currently on-going with the objective of transforming our products to enable us to market fuels with coal-like usability and performance from biomass-based raw materials sourced from sustainable waste streams. This includes the utilisation of hydrothermal carbonisation (we have already commissioned the UK’s first commercial scale HTC plant) and torrification technologies.

The Role:

Working at the heart of the business, this is an exciting opportunity to influence strategy at a senior level within a dynamic and changing business. You will support the CEO and CFO to deliver key strategic initiatives for the development of solid bio-fuels and progression of clean air and renewable energy legislation in the UK and Europe. This will require you to work closely with the senior leadership team to deliver some of the most challenging and important strategic developments that will have significant impacts on both the business and the environment.

Based at our head office in Sheffield, you will be involved in a broad range of activities to support the strategic projects, which will require you to become the ‘knowledge lead’ for the business for sustainable fuels and associated technologies. Amongst other things, you will be involved in:

  • On-going research into the progress of relevant environmental legislative changes and environmental trends and developments;
  • Assessing threats and opportunities from the research and providing the necessary advice and reports to the senior leadership team;
  • Acting as lead contact for our lobbyists and consultants to progress our political lobbying and government policy influencing work; and
  • Supporting the strategic projects generally to progress key items to achieve the necessary timelines through managing project actions and engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure completion.
  • A basic salary of up to £40,000

The Person:

We are looking for someone with a broad and enquiring mind, who has a strong intellect, a passion for change and an insatiable capacity for work.

You will be of graduate calibre and will probably have at least a first degree in an environmental science discipline. You will already know your way around environmental legislation and have proven academic research and analysis abilities. This must also be backed by strong communications and administration skills, including use of MS Office applications. Essentially though, you will have a strong work ethic that is combined with persistence, drive and the ability to work proactively at pace to meet demanding deadlines.

If you think you have what it takes to change our business and you’re up for a challenge then we’d love to hear from you.
