Mabbett is a consultancy offering safety, environment and engineering services since 1996 in Glasgow, Scotland. Our team includes engineers, environmental, QEHS, process safety and energy professionals.

The firm is seeking to recruit a Field Ornithologist with excellent ornithological knowledge to join our growing team, working from our Inverness office. The main purpose of the role would be to conduct bird surveys at locations across the Highlands, within a range of upland, peatland and lowland environments. The position may require travel, occasional overnight stays throughout the U.K., and further afield depending on project requirements - a valid passport and photo ID is required. This a six month contract initially, starting in March 2020, with the opportunity of becoming full time, depending on project pipeline and performance.

Position Overview and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as a member of the Construction Environment Team from the Inverness office and will be responsible for the completion of ornithological and ecological surveys on major construction sites. This will include planning of survey schedules for several sites, electronic data recording in the field followed by data QA and by processing and reporting in the office. This will require remote and lone working on sometimes difficult habitat. Depending on experience, there is the opportunity to also get involved in the planning and delivery of ecological surveys (Phase 1, and protected species) and support our team of Ecological Clerks of Work.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and position requirements.

Qualifications and Experience


  • Qualified at University level;
  • Full U.K. driving licence with clean driver record;
  • Hold a valid CSCS cards; and
  • Be a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management.


  • A successful track record of completing bird surveys including breeding raptors, divers, woodland grouse, waders and geese, ideally also Vantage Point Surveys;
  • Experience in searching for and finding bird nests, especially wader and passerine nests;
  • Have an established level of ecological consultancy experience; and
  • Have expertise in Scottish species/habitats, including relevant survey guidance and legislation.

In addition to the above, we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with some of the following:

  • Schedule 1 Bird Species Licence holder;
  • Protected Species Survey Experience (otter, water vole, badger, pine marten, Scottish wildcat, squirrel, etc);
  • Phase 1 Habitat Surveys; and
  • Ecological Clerk of Works experience (including valid CSCS card).
