Description 

China Dialogue Trust is looking for an experienced researcher (50% FTE) to support the editorial team on an investigative project looking at:

• the environmental impact of of the global palm oil industry, its supply chains and its role in driving deforestation and biodiversity loss; and,
• sustainable policy options and the efficacy of existing policy and practice, with a particular focus on the critical importance of the growing Chinese and Indian markets.

You should have experience of research -- for academic, investigative journalism, thinktank or campaigning organisations -- working with data, and an interest in sustainability and supply chains. Chinese language is an advantage, but not essential. You will work alongside the team in our London office, coordinating with journalists, experts, activists and practitioners around the world. 

Since its launch in 2006, China Dialogue (www.chinadialogue.net) has built a track record of disseminating high-quality information and promoting communication on environment and climate change in both English and Chinese. We provide a space for open discussion, with the aim of informing and educating international and Chinese readers, and contributing to building equitable and constructive solutions to global environmental problems.

• Knowledge of Chinese, Southeast and South Asian current affairs.

Main responsibilities:

• Conducting research into palm oil supply chains connecting Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin and America to markets in China and India;
• Identifying and profiling the key companies and countries involved in palm oil production and purchase;
• Collating and verfiying key palm oil statistics that will be used in stories, graphics and multimedia;
• Building relationships with NGOs working in this field;
• Researching the latest policy debates, corporate activity and consumer trends in Chinese and Indian markets;
• Researching and writing company profiles;
• Supporting the development of a survey of consumer attitudes; 
• Identifying and developing potential investigative stories and contributors.
