Environmental Education Countryside Ranger

(Responsibilities in environmental education, land and farm animal care)

35 hours per week

Working Monday - Friday and 1.5 weekends per month (one full weekend, and another Saturday), for which time off in lieu will be given.

Salary: £16,000 with accommodation provided on site. (This is the equivalent of £19,643 pro rata).

Unfortunately we cannot allow dogs, cats or pets that go outside.

This job has social, educational and environmental outcomes.

Based on our organic farm, the Magdalen Environmental Trust provides outdoor environmental education to children and adults, and therapeutic / respite opportunities to people with more complex needs.

We work with a wide range of people including schools, families, charities and schools from across southern England. We are a leading Care Farm and are growing this provision. You can learn a lot about us from our website: www.magdalenfarm.org.uk

The aims of our education programme are to help people make better decisions about how they interact with their environment and with nature, and to provide opportunities for those people, particularly children, to develop a love of nature. If they don’t love it, they won’t value it. Working with schools, (providing environmental education, Forest Schools and personal development for children), is our main activity through much of the year, and the main focus for this vacant post.

Personal development is also a key outcome, not least within our Care Farming services. Many of our Care Farming clients live extremely difficult and demanding lives. Our aim is to help them improve their mental and emotional resilience, and their ability to overcome these difficulties.

Magdalen Farm is 132 acres of organic farmland, woodland and nature reserve. The habitats on site include a mile of riverbank, ponds and streams, woods and miles of hedgerows. Hay meadows boast a wealth of wildflowers and attendant insects.

The farm also has small herds of pigs and goats, a horse, flocks of chickens and hives of bees.

Throughout the year, the role will include traditional Ranger activities of site care, countryside management and care of livestock, and also the provision of high quality environmental education to a range of visitors, but predominantly primary school children.

The work patterns will be affected by the seasons, spending more time on education in the spring and summer (when demand is highest) and more time on practical Ranger duties in the autumn and winter. We expect approximately:

February – July 4 days delivering education, 1 day doing other Ranger duties.

August – January 1 day delivering education, 4 days doing other Ranger duties.
