Job Purpose

We’re looking for an Assistant Director to work alongside the 2 Joint Directors, Jane and Nicole, in taking Global Generation forward, ensuring we stay innovative, creative, rooted in the local community and financially sustainable. Global Generation is pioneering a way-finding, action research approach to its development, championing collaborative ways of working within the team and moving away from traditional hierarchical organisational models. The Assistant Director should be interested in working within this paradigm.

Organisational Context

Global Generation has an established network of urban gardens in and around King’s Cross, West Euston and Canada Water. Our work connects people of all ages to nature in the middle of the city. We focus on the development of the whole person, providing support for children and young people to become catalysts for change in their communities. We integrate values-based reflective learning into practical sessions, enabling people to grow themselves, grow relationships and grow a new vision for the future. The moveable Skip Garden was created 10 years ago and has been Global Generation’s ‘mothership’. It is an urban oasis with a twist - a portable garden that moves to different locations on the King's Cross site as and when land is sold and built on. It is a garden of a thousand hands, built with young people, architecture students and local business volunteers, together creating a new and sustainable community. The food we grow in the Skip Garden gets used in our café. The current Skip Garden is closing at the end of October 2019 and our main base for King’s Cross is now the Story Garden, a new space opened this summer behind the British Library to engage the local community and continue our work from there. Your main base will be the Story Garden with outreach work taking place in and around King’s Cross in Camden and Islington.

Specific job context

Global Generation is at an exciting time, having grown from a small grassroots organisation, we are now a core team of 15. The majority of our work continues to be in and around King’s Cross, working with both Camden and Islington, specifically focusing on the area from Caledonian Road to Euston. Over the next few years, many new opportunities are opening up for us. We are looking for an Assistant Director to work alongside us to develop and deliver these new opportunities, which include:

  • A partnership approach to community-led greening with business engagement in Somers Town and Euston and developing the possibility of having a permanent Story Garden in the area (Camden)
  • A Floating Garden and Classroom - on the Regents Canal at Granary Square in King’s Cross (in Camden, in partnership with Argent and Canal River Trust)
  • A permanent Skip Garden on the King’s Cross Estate - this will be the first time that we have a permanent site (in partnership with Argent in Islington in the Caledonian area)
  • An outreach programme of children, youth and community work in the Caledonian and Bemerton area, leading to having our permanent site locally
