Closing date: Friday, 22nd November 2019

Kent Wildlife Trust are looking for an enthusiastic and driven individual to join our team. As the Area Warden for the Medway Wetlands, you will be responsible for the day to day management of a range of important and varied conservation sites, including Peters Pit SAC, Holborough Marshes, Wouldham Common and Culand Pits.

This is an extremely exciting opportunity for a person with a proven commitment to conservation to make a real positive difference to the natural heritage of Kent.

Kent Wildlife Trust manages and protects over 9000 acres of land across more than 80 different sites and nature reserves, alongside 3 visitor centres. The Estates team, led by the Head of Estates, composes 4 Area Managers and 9 Area Wardens. The team is supported by regular volunteers, volunteer trainees and contractors.

The Job:

The Area Warden will be responsible for the day to day management of a range of important nature reserves. Duties will include planning and delivering practical habitat management activities, leading and managing conservation volunteers, supervising contractors, leading conservation grazing schemes while always ensuring the highest health and safety standards are maintained at all times.

Partnership working will be a key feature of this role as several of the nature reserves to be managed by the post holder are owned by private companies who are supportive of the conservation work of the Trust.

The Medway Wetlands reserves comprise a rich mix of wet grasslands, reed bed, chalk downland, woodland and former chalk pits. An internationally important population of Great Crested Newts thrive in Peters Pit and the remaining sites support important bird, plant and invertebrate populations.

This post will include additional duties at Kent Wildlife Trust’s Blue Bell Hill nature reserve, including opening/closing of the reserve and some minor maintenance tasks, involving some weekend/evening working as part of a rota.

You:

The ideal candidate will have experience of similar nature reserves/habitats, alongside the habitat management approaches involved. The candidate will have demonstrable ability to lead, manage and motivate volunteer teams.

You will be a team player with a desire to share experience with colleagues and a willingness to learn from others. Effective working with others, whether it be teams from across Kent Wildlife Trust, partners or stakeholders, will be key to success within this role, so an attitude of cooperation is essential.

This post is well suited to either an experienced conservation manager looking to expand their knowledge and experience, or to a candidate with less experience looking to build their skillset.

You will also have:

  • Willingness to work a flexible work pattern including alternating weekend and evenings
  • A good knowledge of nature conservation management, natural history and biological monitoring and surveying techniques.
  • Physical fitness and an aptitude for outdoor work
  • Strong self-motivation and commitment to nature conservation and ability to manage and work with people.
  • An understanding of community working and awareness raising activities
  • Ability to produce concise and engaging reports for partners and funders
  • Full clean driving licence.

Kent Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife charity for Kent and Medway, supported by its members and staffed by committed professionals. We are all working to protect wildlife and to find better ways to run an efficient and effective organisation.
