Kew is the world’s leading botanic gardens, at the forefront of plant and fungal science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction.

We want a world where plants and fungi are understood, valued and conserved – because our lives depend on them. We use the power of our science and the rich diversity of our gardens and collections to provide knowledge, inspiration and understanding of why plants and fungi matter to everyone.

We are seeking a full-time species Red List assessor to work on an update to the Red List Index for Plants. Building on the baseline assessment in 2010, that reported ‘1 in 5 plants’ were at risk of extinction, the Index will be updated to better understand global trends in plant extinction risk.

This is an office-based position within the Conservation Assessment and Analysis team and will be based in the Herbarium. You will compile, evaluate and analyse data for priority plant species across the world to determine Red List status over different time periods. The resulting Index will contribute towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) and the Sustainable Development Goals.

You will be a highly competent researcher with excellent skills in handling and analysing data as well as experience of assessing species using the IUCN Red List system, and publishing them on the IUCN Red List.

There are two twelve month fixed-term Species Conservation Assessor roles available, starting on 25th November.

We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a broad range of Learning and Development opportunities, with access to the Civil Service training curriculum, generous annual leave entitlement for new starters, family friendly policies, a choice of competitive pensions and flexible benefits scheme as well as free entry into a wide range of national museums and galleries.
