The Conservation Volunteers – The Community Volunteering Charity

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people’s health, prospects and outdoor places.

About the role

Based at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park in London, the successful candidate will be responsible for two key deliverables. Firstly, to deliver community outreach, education and activity programmes to engage and inspire our local community with nature in this urban area. Secondly, provide a Ranger service carrying out daily H&S checks, habitat management and co-ordinating community events and licences on site.

Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park has been part of the local community on the Peninsula for over 15 years. It has quickly established into a bio-diverse urban wetland, with over 21,000 people visiting each year. The Park is owned by The Land Trust and managed in partnership with TCV. The primary habitats include two lakes surrounded by marshland which supports a huge range of bird and insect species. There’s also a mosaic of smaller habitats include alder carr, shingle beaches, wildflower meadows, reed beds, shrub layers, hedgerows and willow coppices. This unique mixture of habitats supports everything from newts and frogs to stag beetles and butterflies and ensures the Park is bursting with life all year round. The park is carefully managed by two park wardens and a dedicated team of volunteers.

In 2018 a new ‘outdoor classroom’ was built providing much needed space to deliver a wider range of environmental education and activities for an expanding population on the Peninsula. This role will be key in bringing this classroom to life and offering the local community a range of hands-on activities and outreach events. You will engage with our residents and neighbours who may not have visited the Park or are under-represented on site.

With increased visitor numbers, additional support is needed to also carry out daily H&S site checks and general site management activities.

This role will be split with 3 days a week focused on community engagement, and 1.5 days a week on site checks and site management support.

You will:

  • Organise and deliver a series of community outreach, education and activities including holiday sessions, adult education, practical conservation tasks, health walks, and discovery sessions;
  • Develop and maintain community partner relationships;
  • Carry out daily site checks in the Park;
  • Monitor and report on contract works;
  • Co-ordinate community events and licences on site;
  • Co-ordinate resources, including, tools, equipment PPE and sessional leader booking;
  • Maintain safe working practices;
  • Maintain records of activities and complete all associated administration work as required;
  • Support day-to-day Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park site management;
  • Support to other projects if/ when necessary;

Weekend work and some lone working will be required on a shift pattern.

You will have experience of community outreach, delivering environmental education and activity sessions, working with volunteers with mixed levels of ability, experience of practical environmental conservation skills, site/contract inspections and the personality, aptitude and experience to inspire the public with the green spaces on their doorstep. IT literacy is required.
