Company background:

New Wave Foods is a leading processor of edible organic seaweed based in the Scottish Highlands. We wild sustainably harvest seaweed for processing at our factory in Wick. We are also pioneering the farming of seaweed in Scotland. New Wave Foods has created its own brand, SHORE: The Scottish Seaweed Co., through which it sells seaweed wholesale and has a range of value-add food products that use seaweed as a key ingredient.

Key responsibilities:

  • Seaweed aquaculture: scoping and research into seaweed farming, development of seaweed farm trials, coordination with partners
  • Wild harvest site management: seaweed stock assessment fieldwork and data analysis, harvest site licencing, harvest quota management
  • Environmental impact monitoring: managing the wild seaweed harvesting impact monitoring program, focused regrowth studies of key commercially valuable species
  • Technical research: contribution to food technical tasks, including managing production databases, analysis of SHORE seaweed products and continuous improvement of operations
  • Applications research: contribution to developing wholesale markets for seaweed

As we are a young and entrepreneurial company, the post is dynamic and the successful candidate is likely to contribute to other areas of the business.

Key attributes of the candidate:

  • Minimum MSc. in relevant marine science discipline (e.g. marine ecology, marine biology, aquaculture, oceanography)
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about the marine environment
  • Applied knowledge of macroalgae and aquaculture
  • A scientific approach, with a considered, analytic and professional attitude
  • Strong IT skills, including high proficiency with Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel and experience with GIS software
  • Ability to organise and manage multiple tasks with a positive approach and focus on delivery
  • An effective communicator and team player with ability to build and maintain positive, working relationships
  • Practical hands on approach; and capable of working both on own initiative and proactively as part of a team
  • Flexible approach with regards to working away from home for several days at a time and outside of normal working hours in order to complete surveys during spring tide.
  • EU/UK Driving licence
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Willingness to travel as part of the role
