Senior Conservation Grazing Officer, Usk to Wye

Gwent Wildlife Trust is recruiting a full-time Senior Conservation Grazing Officer, working within the Usk to Wye (U2W) Living Landscape team.

The post holder will oversee our conservation grazing operations within U2W nature reserves, act as the point of call for conservation grazing, manage our organic, meat-box scheme and be responsible for the management and welfare of GWT’s rare breed sheep and cattle. This post will also manage cattle grazing across a few project based, lowland heathland sites. The post is based near Monmouth.

Other duties will include overseeing a team of volunteer ‘shepherds’, managing contractors, undertaking practical site management work, survey and monitoring, potentially leading practical engagement activities for volunteer groups, and working within the Living Landscape team to deliver better outcomes for wildlife.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and practical individual with extensive experience in cattle and sheep husbandry. Trained to a high standard, the ideal candidate will have experience of stock handling, use of veterinary medication, wildlife conservation and management of nature reserves, able to use trailers, tractors, machinery and ATVs, have experience in working with contractors and who can engage volunteers and the public. They need to be practical, passionate and knowledgeable about wildlife, work in all weathers and have a real desire to manage livestock and conservation grazing to help wildlife flourish.

Salary: £ 25,345 to £26,172 + pension contribution (reflecting ‘on-call’ livestock responsibilities and depending on experience)

This is a permanent, full-time position.

Full details are on our website www.gwentwildlife.org. For further information or an informal chat, contact Neville Hart on 01600 740600.

Closing date: 12 noon on Thursday 5th September 2019

We WILL NOT accept CVs – even if accompanied by an application form.

Interviews: Tuesday 17th September 2019. Applicants should keep this date free.
