Job Description

Do you have a good environmental understanding and a commitment to developing a career in the environmental or conservation sectors? The Westcountry Rivers Trust is looking for a confident and technically capable individual to fulfil the role of Water Monitoring Officer. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, organised and enthusiastic individual able to work to deadlines and under pressure.

This specialist role, sitting in the Trust’s Evidence & Engagement Team, will be a full-time permanent position based at our Head Office in Cornwall. The post will report to Dr Nick Paling, Head of Evidence & Engagement.

A critical part of the Trust’s work is the monitoring of water quality and quantity to provide quantitative evidence for interventions and/or land management advice given for existing projects, or to support the validity of a proposed project. We are seeking a competent, confident candidate to join our vibrant and passionate team of environmentalists, to assist with designing and implementing water quality campaigns, as well as analysing and interpreting data in a meaningful way. The successful candidate should have a degree in an environmental science related subject and have prior practical experience of water quality monitoring in the field.

The role will include:

  • Experimental design of sampling campaigns
  • Collection and on-site analysis of quality samples
  • Deployment of specialist monitoring kit, including continuous data loggers and telemetry units
  • Data entry and updating/maintenance of spreadsheets
  • Data analysis and visualisation
  • Data interpretation and reporting

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Appropriate Degree level qualification in an environmental discipline
  • Prior experience of freshwater sample collection and analysis
  • Self-motivated, organised and enthusiastic individual able to work to deadlines and under pressure
  • Experience of catchment-scale approaches and processes
  • Full, valid UK driving license & own vehicle as this role requires frequent site work and therefore the ability to travel between sites is essential
  • Good data management skills
  • Good communication skills, both internally and to external clients, volunteers or public
  • The ability to work primarily as part of a team but also competent working alone (particularly in the field)
  • A passion for the natural environment and desire to make a difference in this exciting field of science

Desirable Criteria

The following are not essential for the role but would be an advantage:

  • Experience of water quality kit deployment
  • Experience using and programming open source electronics platforms such as Arduino
  • Experience using more specialist data analysis software / statistical packages such as R
  • Health and safety training
  • First Aid trained
