Job Purpose and Background 

Are you passionate about using data to drive change? Do you have excellent data analysis skills alongside the ability and desire to work with users of data and to communicate well?

CDP’s Data Team are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic data analyst who is passionate to use data to drive companies, investors and governments to build a thriving economy which works for people and planet. You will work with the team to build our annual Clean and Complete Dataset of corporate emissions data, and our Clean Targets Dataset of corporate climate action targets. R is our main data analysis tool, and you will be our expert, helping colleagues and ensuring good practices are maintained 

As other projects are agreed you should expect to work with the data we gather from Cities, States and Regions and Companies, across our three themes of Climate, Water Security and Deforestation. 

The Data Team is part of the IT Department. Its primary remit is to improve the usability of the corporate climate change, water security and forests data and cities, states & regions data disclosed to CDP by developing and applying robust and transparent methods for data cleaning and modelling. It supplements this work with harmonized data collected from external sources and seeks to enhance accessibility for CDP’s stakeholders. As well as this, the team produces value-adding analyses that help internal and external stakeholders better understand these vital environmental data and make better decisions from them. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • As part of the team, build the clean and complete data set, and the cleaned targets dataset 
  • Support and train colleagues, investors, NGOs and other data users in the use of our data and data products 
  • Either with sole responsibility or as part of a team, deliver data products and analysis projects across all CDP themes and stakeholders 
  • Support colleagues in their use of R, and ensure good practices are maintained 
  • Other work in line with your skills and experience 

Required skills and experience:

  • Excellent understanding of approaches to data cleaning and modelling using R 
  • Excellent data analysis experience using R 
  • Extraordinary data wrangling skills 
  • Familiarity with GitHub, Linux, Shell scripting (bash) 
  • Good communication skills in English 
  • An awareness of environmental issues, particularly as they relate to our core themes of Climate Change, Deforestation and Water Security 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Strong numeracy and good statistical skills, probably gained through an advanced degree 

Desired skills and experience: 

  • A good understanding of GHG accounting methods and sustainability data across some or all of companies, cities, states and regions 
  • Data visualization skills, and experience in the development of data products
  • Knowledge of the financial system and capital markets 
  • Experience of SQL (preferably T-SQL) and Excel 

This is a permanent, full time role based at CDP’s London office reporting to the Associate Director, Data. 

Salary and benefits: £30,000 - £37,000 per annum depending on experience. 30 days holiday excluding bank holidays.
