Purpose of the role:

We are seeking a graduate or postgraduate in applied Life Sciences. Specialisms in plant science, crop protection or invasive species would be particularly complimentary to the skills and requirements of the existing team. However, other life sciences would be considered.

The role of Content Editor brings subject matter expertise to a range of activities to ensure CABI’s new and existing products maintain their high standards.

In particular, this role will have a focus on the generation and management of content and data associated with our Invasive Species products, including the Invasive Species Compendium.

The Content Editor will develop responsibilities in enhancing and managing new and existing products, bringing a creative and flexible approach, and a willingness to work across a range of activities. This includes commissioning and contributing content and perspectives to products and projects, assimilating the latest research into appropriate forms of broadcast for our users (blogs, news, social media, etc), and assessing newly published research for inclusion in CABI products.

There may also be opportunities to work closely with multidisciplinary teams on product and systems development in an agile environment.

Understanding of key subject areas is required so that the jobholder can ensure that CABI’s products cover the these comprehensively and that our future plans align with the direction of research.

The role involves working with a range of teams within CABI, including Editorial, Operations, Sales and Marketing, and those managing information or development projects.

Key accountabilities:

  • Commissioning, editing and management of peer review of expert summaries of invasive species for CABI’s compendia programme. Additional management of coverage, quality and quantity of other content relevant to stakeholders in this scientific specialism. This content may include bibliographic records, full text, book chapters, images and other relevant types.
  • Maintenance and development of key datasets published in compendia such as species distribution data, species-species relationships, species-habitat associations, etc.
  • Contribute to the specification of requirements and testing of production system and product improvements
  • Writing news and blogs for a scientific audience
  • Providing subject knowledge to support input to donor-funded projects
  • Assessing material for inclusion in CABI products, including grey literature and full text
  • Contribute to the creation and development of new products
  • Providing expertise to other functions, such as Sales and Marketing
  • Using social media to raise CABI’s profile

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Knowledge & Skills (essential)

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in appropriate scientific discipline
  • Excellent editorial, writing and analytical skills, including excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and an enthusiasm for scientific communication
  • Interest in management, analysis and use of scientific data
  • Broad knowledge of, and interest in, current developments in appropriate scientific discipline
  • Business awareness and customer focus
  • Interest in current developments and trends in online publishing
  • Organizational skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines

Experience (desirable)

  • Experience in an editorial/data role in research, academic publishing or in another information/data management role related to the scientific discipline
  • Product development experience such as acting as Product Owner in an IT development environment
  • Project experience
  • Technical aptitude, including use of databases and proprietary software
  • Foreign language skills
  • International development
