Digital Communications Assistant (engagement)

With current and anticipated growth in Antarctic tourism, the demand on the Secretariat is growing and with that, the need for the Secretariat to expand. As a result, IAATO is seeking a Digital Communications Assistant.

The Digital Communications Assistant will support IAATO in its mission to advocate and promote the practice of safe and environmentally responsible Antarctic private-sector travel through effective communications and marketing, and assist the members of the Secretariat with additional tasks.

The role will involve internal and external communications, social media communication, press releases, web site management and development, newsletters, meeting preparations, maintaining a photographic database, responding to communications-related member requests and other essential tasks.

The communications assistant will work closely with the Communications and Engagement Officer, Head of Communications and Environment and the Executive Director.

Essential Skills

As well as relevant education and communications experience, candidates should have exceptional organization and planning skills, be self-motivated and:

  • have excellent English speaking and writing skills;
  • possess experience in corporate social media management, content creation and editing;
  • have experience in website management;
  • able to identify stories which can enhance the reputation of IAATO as an industry leader and create strong and professional press releases and other external communications and marketing materials;
  • able to quickly identify and respond to emerging issues which may have a reputational impact on IAATO and/or its polar partners;
  • able to create professional and engaging social media content;
  • possess the resilience to work under pressure and in high pressure environments both as part of a team and with the ability to take the initiative as required;
  • come up with creative solutions to sharing news and developments in a way which encourages widespread reach across our core audiences;
  • able to manage multiple tasks and/or projects with minimal supervision;
  • be sensitive to different people, cultures and politics.

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of Antarctic issues, the polar expedition cruise industry and responsible tourism;
  • Knowledge and/or interest in environmental issues;
  • In addition to English, fluent in one or more of the six official languages of the United Nations

The role will require international travel throughout the year for high-profile meetings and conferences as well as regular communications with international colleagues.

Salary and other terms of employment will be agreed based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

a) You are invited to deliver a social media campaign for IAATO. The subject and audience is entirely up to you, but should be aligned with IAATO’s mission of safe, environmentally responsible private-sector travel to Antarctica. Please outline the steps you would take to develop a campaign, how you would deliver it and measure success. 

b) Please provide examples of posts you would write for in support of your campaign, which social media channels you would use and why.
