Job Title: Education Manager
Location: Renewi UK Services Ltd, South Kirkby, Pontefract
Salary: £27-30k dependent on experience
Hours/Contract: 37.5 hours per week, exclusive of lunch breaks, usually worked between the hours of 08.00 – 16.00 or to accommodate out of hours events.

Renewi is a leading international waste-to-product business. With over 8000 employees we have operations in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK and provide a range of recycling and energy recovery solutions and technologies to customers in the public and private sectors. 

Renewi work in partnership with Wakefield Council to manage all of Wakefield’s Municipal waste, which includes, garden waste and recycling. The contract also requires Renewi to provide a dedicated waste education service for schools and the community, delivered from a purpose built education and visitor centre. An outreach programme is also provided. As the Education Manager you will lead the Education Service working closely with the Councils team. The Education Service delivers in excess of 75 events each year aimed at reducing waste and raising awareness on many themes including contamination. A key focus of the role is to change waste and recycling behaviours, as well as supporting waste minimisation.

Key Purpose of the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an energetic, engaging and motivated Education Manager to lead and develop the education service on behalf of Wakefield Council across the district.

Renewi and Wakefield Council work together to deliver educational events and activities to schools, community groups, Brownie/Scout groups, higher education institutes or other interested groups, with the aim of increasing awareness of waste minimisation and recycling. This includes understanding what happens to our waste, why it’s important to reduce, reuse and recycle and how we can take action.

Leading a small team, your role will be to organise and deliver these events and activities. You will visit schools, community events and organisations across Wakefield District to deliver engaging assemblies, activities and talks to inspire people to value our natural resources and take action in minimising their environmental impact.

We are looking for someone with a positive approach, passion and confidence in working with the general public, plus a personal commitment to sustainability.

The successful applicant will be a qualified education professional with at least three years’ experience of working with children and young people. Knowledge and experience of the environment and waste would be an advantage, however this is not essential.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivery of the education service across the Wakefield district, achieving target number of events within a 12-month period.
  • Develop new waste minimisation initiatives
  • Project manage waste minimisation campaigns and projects to achieve desired outcomes
  • Management of a small team
  • Lead a series of doorstep engagement campaigns across the district
  • Work with the Council to develop the strategic objectives
  • Participating in regular waste minimization/recycling initiatives which run in partnership with Wakefield Council, taking the lead where required
  • Continue to improve and develop the Education Centre classroom, outdoor area and woodland
  • Promote and market the education service to people from the Wakefield district
  • Update educational event records and calendars using Microsoft Excel
  • Provide monthly, annual and project reporting
  • Participation in managerial and health and safety meetings
  • Carry out daily inspections of the Education Centre buildings

Experience, Education & Qualifications


  • Recognised education qualification
  • Interest in environmental education
  • Passion for sustainability
  • Experience of working in an educational setting, preferably with pupils of Primary or Secondary school age
  • Experience of delivering, participating and leading on projects aimed at behavioural change and reporting findings.
  • Experience of developing hands on teaching resources and workshops linked to the National Curriculum
  • IT literate – comfortable using MS Office packages and social media, particularly Facebook and Instagram
  • A good level of Health & Safety awareness
  • Team player who can work independently
  • High level of creativity
  • Excellent communication skills to a wide audience
  • Good time and project management skills
  • Full UK Driving License with access to a vehicle
