The Conservation Volunteers – The Community Volunteering Charity

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people’s health, prospects and outdoor places.

About the role:

Based at the TCV office in Reading but working throughout Berkshire & Southern Oxfordshire and occasionally beyond.

The focus of the role will be developing a new biodiversity off-setting project in woodlands owned by Reading & Wokingham Borough Councils. This exciting role supports TCV in enabling people and communities to improve their health, prospects and outdoor places. We have an outstanding track record of delivering conservation, community and health projects and want to build on this whilst continuing to meet the needs of our diverse communities, existing and potential partners and becoming a beacon of best practice for us nationally.

This role, working 21 hours per week, is focused on delivering the Network Rail funded Trees & Trains in the Thames Valley project. You will be a strong team player with a can-do approach, bringing creativity and innovation to the team.  This is a fixed term position until 31st March 2023.

The post holder will support the Operations Leader in delivering the TCV Strategic Plan including business development and fundraising.

The post holder’s role will include:

  • Leading a Bio-diversity Action Team of volunteers, to improve woodland sites across the project area.
  • Carry out flora & fauna surveys to create a baseline then help evidence the biodiversity improvements.
  • Ensure participants receive an excellent volunteering experience.
  • Marketing to enable the success of the project and significantly raise our profile in the vicinity.
  • Recruiting & developing Volunteer Officers to support the project.
  • Supporting the Operations Leader in delivering TCV’s Strategic Plan including business development and fundraising.

Experience required:

  • Co-ordinating volunteers.
  • Planning and leading practical conservation projects.
  • Working with partner organisations to deliver community projects.
  • Fundraising.
  • Working with community groups.
  • Knowledge of practical conservation skills, woodland & countryside management. It would be a bonus to have a chainsaw qualification.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with people with varying abilities and levels of influence.

The Conservation Volunteers support a flexible approach to determining the hours worked by the post holder, although they will be expected to remain flexible, with some weekend and evening work to be expected.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working with volunteers and community groups. Knowledge of practical conservation skills, woodland & countryside management issues. Additional knowledge or experience in arboriculture would be advantageous. Our projects work with volunteers and people with a wide variety of ages, abilities and backgrounds. The successful candidate is likely to have experience of working with many sectors of the community delivering diverse activities.

The post holder will work as part of The Conservation Volunteers team which runs the TCV Reading office and delivers outreach work across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire. We are a small team of staff & volunteers, supporting each other on all areas of work.

A full driving licence (for a manual transmission vehicle) is essential, (which has been held for a minimum of one year), as the post holder has use of company vehicles. D1 entitlement on your licence would be a bonus.

A bit more about us:

We recognise that each community and the people living there have different needs. Whether improving wellbeing, conserving a well-loved outdoor space or bringing people together to promote social cohesion and combat loneliness, TCV works together with communities to deliver practical solutions to the real life challenges they face.

For 60 years we have adapted our work with volunteers to reflect the changing needs of communities in the UK and, by giving people a sense of purpose and belonging, we have empowered them to take control of their lives and outdoor spaces for the benefit of all.

Whilst our activities vary, our inclusive approach has remained consistent; bringing people and places together to create happy, healthy and connected communities for everyone.
