A motivated and organised person is required to assist the County Council and other local authorities in Hampshire in their planning function and own development schemes to ensure that development within the County is sensitive to biodiversity.

This is an opportunity to work with a progressive multi-faceted local authority ecology team, providing you training and experience in both planning and consultancy that will be invaluable in your career development.

An Assistant Ecologist role in the public sector differs from one in private consultancy in the level of flexibility, autonomy and depth of project involvement provided, without having the need to stay away from home for survey work. The role is fulfilling and in a well-supported working environment.

In support of the Senior Ecologists and the wider Ecology Team, you will be working closely with Highway Authority and Property Services colleagues and undertaking a wide range of field-based ecological surveys, including extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys and protected species surveys. You will also be managing small projects, carrying out desk studies, data analysis, designing mitigation and report writing. The applicant will need the ability to organise and prioritise workloads to meet project deadlines, as well as the flexibility to work regular unsociable hours during the survey season.

You should have an appropriate degree and/or professional qualification and relevant experience with a strong background in protected species ecology and survey methods. An understanding of applied ecology, impact assessments and mitigation strategies is important.
