Founded in 1985, NHBS Ltd ( is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, and private customers around the world. In addition to the retail business, NHBS manufactures equipment in an on-site workshop and publishes two magazines. NHBS is passionate about making a positive environmental impact - our core purpose is to support those who work to understand, protect and conserve the natural environment.

NHBS is looking for a full-time Marketing Assistant to join our small Marketing team in Totnes who will report to the Marketing Coordinator. 

We are looking for someone with a good knowledge of natural history and ecology. You will need to work quickly to help produce marketing emails and create printed fliers from templates. You will write high quality copy for promotional material. In any given week our adverts run in magazines, our emails reach thousands of customers and our printed fliers, catalogues and newsletters land on hundreds of doormats. The Marketing Assistant plays a key role in producing this material. 

This is a great opportunity for a well-organised individual with an interest in marketing and nature conservation.

As Marketing Assistant, some of your responsibilities will be:

  • Assisting with production of the different strands of our marketing campaigns (emails, fliers, print catalogues, print advertising, online advertising, website campaigns, and social media)
  • Writing interesting and informative text about the products and services offered by NHBS
  • Preparing marketing materials including emails, blog posts, and author interviews, including writing copy
  • Assisting with lead generation
  • Assisting with conference preparation
  • Helping with development and implementation of our social media content, including blog posts, email reposting and Facebook and Twitter marketing
  • Help to write copy for and help to organise the production of our printed catalogues
  • Recording data on marketing campaigns
  • Developing an understanding of our customer base and learning to assist with the creation of marketing populations for emails, catalogues, Facebook and Twitter ads
  • Proofreading and editing marketing copy

The ideal candidate will bring the following to the role:

  • A good telephone manner and outstanding written communication skills
  • Above all, we value a common-sense approach, critical thinking and a willingness to learn new skills
  • A passion for writing and love of the English Language
  • Ability to modify writing style based upon customer type, e.g. academic, naturalist, construction etc.
  • A demonstrated interest in ecology and conservation
  • Knowledge of a major European language is desirable
  • Social media awareness and understanding how people interact with it

Our offer to you

The successful candidate will be joining a diverse and friendly workforce of 45 staff.

This permanent position is available immediately. Salary: £16,500 - £17,500p.a. (depending on experience), based on a 37.5-hour week Monday - Friday, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a including bank holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.
