This is an RSPB Warden position with its own unique flavour.

You’ll be the sort of person who appreciates that environment more than you do the social trappings and convenience of more central reserves. Gwenffrwd Dinas has no RSPB premises, so if the noise and clamour of busy Visitor Centres is not your thing and you prefer a pure, natural space for your office then read on.

Gwenffrwd Dinas is a breathtakingly beautiful location set in the heart of mid-Wales. A traditional mosaic of hedgerow-bound fields blends through unspoilt, steep-sided Atlantic Oak Woodland to Ffridd and then way up to heather-clad moorland. Crashing white water blasts through a rocky landscape preserved from the ravages of mankind through isolation and inaccessibility. We are blessed with exceptional populations of key species such as pied flycatcher, redstart and wood warbler but also celebrate superb lichen and bryophyte interest.

We are at an exciting point in the history of this reserve: RSPB Cymru is celebrating the launch of a €9.5 million Celtic Rainforest LIFE project which brings once in a lifetime funding to support the very best management of our Atlantic Oak Woodlands.

Reference number: A6860319
Location: Carmarthenshire
Salary starting at: £22,073 to £23,912 per annum
Hours: Full time
Contract: Permanent

At Gwenffrwd Dinas we will want you to take on an ambitious Management Plan, maximising all resource at your disposal to showcase RSPB reserve work at its best. You'll be dealing with tenants, visitors, contractors, neighbours and LIFE project staff demonstrating your well-honed people skills. Your estate and habitat management skills will be well tested.

Cwm Clydach has a character all of its own. A small reserve right on the doorstep of Swansea it was a working coal mine in 1962! It is now a well-loved green space in an urban environment. A more dedicated and positive team of local reserve volunteers you will not find. Alive with people it is a tree-lined river site where folk celebrate the simple pleasures of nature. And how nature has reclaimed the place under our watch! We now have otter and silver-washed fritillary. Cwm Clydach is a delicious haven evolving from a gritty history where your focus will be people, infrastructure, volunteer management, visitor safety and encouraging nature to abound and astound.

For these two very different sites we are looking for someone who understands the day to day running of nature reserves. You will have strong conservation and land management skills with a suitable track record. You will have experience in monitoring and surveying. Leadership skills will be central to your success.

The reserves are separated by some distance - and Gwenffrwd Dinas is an isolated location - so while you will know that an accomplished support network is always there to back you up you will be happy working alone for extended periods and will be comfortable making your own decisions and using your own initiative. The challenge of a very small team covering a large area is ever present. This is a great opportunity for someone to demonstrate they can stand on their own two feet.

Two very different sites offering a superb opportunity with variety galore.

This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.
