Founded in 1985, NHBS Ltd ( is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, and private customers around the world. In addition to the retail business, NHBS manufactures equipment in an on-site workshop and publishes two magazines. NHBS is passionate about making a positive environmental impact - our core purpose is to support those who work to understand, protect and conserve the natural environment.

NHBS is looking for a Key Account Manager (trainee) to join our busy Sales & Marketing team in our office in Totnes. This is an entry level role with opportunities for the right candidate to transition quickly into the Key Account Manager role. You will be trained to act as a Key Account Manager for our biggest customers, make regular sales trips and represent NHBS at conferences in the UK and across Europe. A background in sales is not required but enthusiasm for nature and NHBS's products, as well as drive and enthusiasm, are vital. You will work with passionate people and receive both formal training as well as on the job mentoring from your manager.

As Key Account Manager (trainee), some of your responsibilities will be:

  • Building relationships with existing and potential customers
  • Using the company CRM application Netsuite, and other applications such as Pipedrive
  • Visiting existing and potential customers, selling the brand of NHBS
  • Demonstrating and presenting products for customers
  • Visiting and talking to a wide range of customers - professional ecologists, non governmental organisations, universities, research institutes, libraries and construction companies, among others.

The ideal candidate will bring the following to the role:

  • Interest or background in ecology and conservation
  • Educated to degree level
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Great planning and organisation skills
  • An ability to think strategically and generate new ideas
  • Strong English verbal and writing skills
  • A second language in addition to English is desirable
  • Strong personal drive and ambition

The successful candidate will be joining a diverse and friendly workforce of 45 staff.

This permanent position is available immediately. Salary: £18,000 to £20,000 (depending on experience), based on a 37.5-hour week Monday - Friday, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a including bank holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.
