Sustainability Advisor

Location: Edinburgh Zoo

Do you have experience of researching and preparing written case studies on sustainability initiatives and the creation of audit reports citing utilities, waste and recycling, auditing? We are seeking a Sustainability Adviser to carry out a range of administrative support and coordination duties and ensure the continuous development and implementation of one of Scotland’s leading conservation and education charities, sustainability policy.

What you’ll be doing…

The Property & Estates department is responsible for all site maintenance, refurbishment and new build projects at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo. As Sustainability Advisor, working under the guidance of the Project and Sustainability Manager, you can expect to:

  • Working across both sites (RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park), support the Projects & Sustainability Manager by providing a full range of administration service and support duties, e.g. researching and preparing written case studies on sustainability initiatives, creation of audit reports citing utilities, waste and recycling, auditing and monitoring of the society’s environmental management system (ISO14001:2015)
  • Act as the point of contact for front line staff, proactively educate and train staff on best practices and work with them to find workable solutions to environmental/ sustainability issues.
  • Coordinating of sustainability led/ themed campaign activities on site, including supervision of partner organisations.
  • Responsible for recording and monitoring KPI data, including reducing utilities dependency, increasing recycling rates and monthly utility usage across both sites, investigating and reporting any anomalies.
  • Provide auditable records and evidence to ensure continued registration of RZSS within the scope of Green Tourism Award.

This is a fixed term Maternity Cover role expected to last no longer than 12 months where the working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

What you’ll need…

You will be a positive team player with a proven ability of working in a team situation or own your own. You will have experience of working in an auditing environment, applying a high level of attention to detail and the confidence to flag and resolve any inconsistencies. You should be a strong user of MS Excel, highly organised, proactive and flexible in managing demanding workloads and competing priorities, have a sound knowledge of sustainable practices (ISO14001 or equivalent), can inspect daily operations and identify solutions to technical issues, coupled with the ability to prioritise and present a professional approach to all tasks. You should be proactive in problem solving and assisting other team members in completing tasks. A full UK driving licence is also essential.
