A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. Following the opening of its international airport in October 2017, St Helena is better placed to develop both economically and socially.

In this key role you will ensure users of the marine environment are educated on marine protection law and undertake law enforcement intervention.

Engaging with local fishermen and other users of the marine environment to improve understanding, change behaviour and develop a culture of compliance, you will monitor and enforce activities in respect of protected marine species and their habitats and the release of pollutants and waste into the marine environment.

You must be able to work independently, confidently dealing with conflict while building strong stakeholder relationships and local enforcement capacity on island. You will also build relationships within government and community to raise awareness, proactively developing processes and protocols to support effective compliance and enforcement.

Holding a relevant degree level qualification or equivalent or with a compatible and substantial track record, you will have a Personal Survival Techniques or Basic Sea Survival Certificate and a Seafarers Medical Certificate, or be willing to obtain these prior to deployment. You must have experience as an Enforcement Officer or in an enforcement background in a marine environment, including working at sea. With a clear understanding of fisheries and marine legislation, you must have strong communication, negotiation and diplomacy skills and be able to interpret rules and regulations, applying them to practical situations. Flexibility towards working hours will be essential.
