Accounts Administrator

Founded in 1985, NHBS Ltd ( is a world leader in supplying natural history, ecology and conservation books and ecological survey equipment to institutions, retailers, companies, and private customers around the world. In addition to the retail business, NHBS manufactures equipment in an on-site workshop and publishes two magazines. NHBS is passionate about making a positive environmental impact - our core purpose is to support those who work to understand, protect and conserve the natural environment.

NHBS is looking for a full-time Accounts Administrator to join our offices in Totnes. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will be the leader of a small team. The accounts department manages the debtors and creditors, and works closely with other departments in the company to ensure all payments are received and all bills are paid on time and accurately. Some company-wide administrative duties will be required, as well as admin support for the Senior Management Team.

As Accounts Administrator, some of your responsibilities will be:

  • Ensuring all accounts receivables and payables are in good shape
  • Applying and developing accounts policies and procedures
  • Assisting the Accountant in the provision of monthly management accounts
  • Deciding bill payments schedules
  • Assisting colleagues, suppliers and customers over the phone, by email and in person
  • Using the company accounts application Netsuite, Excel and other applications
  • Supervising and training team members
  • Inputting staff salary payments
  • Other responsibilities as required

The ideal candidate will bring the following to the role:

  • Experience working with accounts in a busy environment
  • Some knowledge of accounting principles
  • Discretion and sensitivity when dealing with customers, suppliers, staff and directors
  • Decisiveness and accuracy
  • Team leadership experience
  • Experience using Excel, or accounting software

In addition to this, we would welcome someone who also has:

  • AAT accreditation
  • A demonstrated interest in ecology and conservation
  • Knowledge of a major European language

The successful candidate will be joining a diverse and friendly workforce of 45 staff.

This permanent position is available immediately. Salary: £18,500 – 20,000 p.a. (depending on experience), based on a 37.5-hour week Monday - Friday, with the position attracting 28 days holiday p.a including bank holidays, up to three paid days of conservation volunteering p.a., and a generous company pension.
