Part time Grounds & Estate Officer

Based at: FSC Juniper Hall

Grade:Team Member

Reports to: Centre Manager

There is no line management responsibility associated with this post

Overall Job purpose:  

The Grounds & Estate Officer will work closely with the Maintenance Officer and the Centre Manager, who is responsible for:

  • overall maintenance and improvements to the fabric, fittings and systems of the Field Centre premises, grounds and plant
  • carrying out routine Health and Safety monitoring checks and associated record keeping

This is essentially an active role and will require the post holder to be able to carry out duties associated with maintenance work, including manual handling, e.g. moving and operating tools and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the maintenance of the grounds, in line with any grounds maintenance and development plan: tasks may include waste disposal, general tidiness, upkeep of garden and estate areas, care and use of maintenance and estate equipment. Ensuring the health and safety of visitors within the grounds of the FSC Learning Location.
  • Supporting the Head of Learning Location in developing all aspects of the sites at FSC Juniper Hall and its interpretation for school groups and for other visitors
  • Work with the Regional Site Manager who will be co-ordinating and supporting regional/group and learning location site management plans, procurement, monitoring and resources
  • Carrying out regular tree safety checks and in consultation with the Maintenance Officer, Centre Manager ensure remedial work is carried out
  • Maintaining and ensuring the welfare of any livestock or animals on site
  • Overseeing volunteers who work in the grounds and coordinate activities, ensuring their health and safety. This will include any occasional work parties of volunteers
  • Carrying out the maintenance, service, periodic inspection and testing of all plant and equipment for the grounds and estates
  • General maintenance, cleaning and checking of learning location vehicles, including ride-on mowers, and arranging MOTs, servicing and repairs as required
  • Proactively identifying and carrying out work before issues arise, using established learning location systems to record and solve problems
  • Assisting in the liaison with outside contractors regarding grounds work to meet quality and Health and Safety regulations
  • Assisting with the completion and recording of Health and Safety checks at the learning location
  • Assisting the Maintenance Officer as required with the internal and external repairs to fabric and fittings
  • Some driving duties that will include the transportation of groups or individuals to field sties, train station etc.


  • Complying with all relevant legislation / FSC Operating Codes of Practice (OCoPs) / FSC Health and Safety Handbook and FSC procedures
  • Taking an active role in the learning location’s evening duty system - this will involve staying on site on some evenings to deal with customer issues and, with the support of a Senior member of staff, respond to emergencies
  • Delivering a high standard of customer service and customer care
  • Ensuring the highest standards of quality are achieved in all duties carried out
  • Working closely with other FSC staff with regard to ensuring that appropriate levels of service are maintained during absences and periods of high workload
  • Maintaining professional standards at all times in accordance with FSC policies
  • Fulfilling your obligations under FSC’s Behaviour Partnership to ensure a happy, productive working environment
  • Attending staff meetings as well as FSC internal and external training as required, in order to share best practice and improve team and learning location performance, and participating fully in staff development activities (sometimes this may involve travel to other FSC locations with the occasional overnight stay)
  • Driving: We have a number of vehicles which you will be asked to drive. To do so, you will need to be 21 years or over, have a full valid driving licence, to have been driving for at least two years, and undertake an internal assessment on commencement in the role

Subject to meeting certain criteria, you may also be required to drive our minibuses. If you do not hold D1 entitlement and have the appropriate driving experience/certification, you may be required to undertake the relevant training upon commencement of the role

  • Undertaking any other duties that may reasonably be required to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the learning location
