NatureBureau focuses on nature conservation issues, helping to design policies and guidelines, review legislation, prepare site management plans, conduct field surveys and integrate biodiversity into sustainable business activities. Our imprint, Pisces, is one of the top British publishers of natural history books.

Role description:

The terrestrial ecologist will be involved with acquiring, developing and implementing NatureBureau’s ecology projects (mainly terrestrial) as part of the general ecology team, reporting to the Managing Director (Paul Goriup MSc, CEcol., CEnv., FCIEEM).

The specific duties include:

  • coordination of projects, helping to recruit additional assistance as and when required
  • Preparing literature reviews and scientific reports to publishing standards
  • Quality control of project reports
  • Providing technical support to other parts of the NatureBureau business (coastal and marine ecology, publishing)
  • Promoting the NatureBureau business by writing articles; blog entries; tweets; organising and hosting meetings with potential clients; and giving presentations


The terrestrial ecologist will have the following qualifications:

  • Hold a BSc or preferably MSc in a nature conservation related subject
  • At least 3 years post-graduate experience in a professional capacity
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (or be eligible to apply)
  • Current driving licence and passport

Core knowledge and skills

  • A strong knowledge of terrestrial habitat types, protected species and survey methods
  • Strong computer literacy and use of MS Office applications
  • Data handling and GIS applications
  • Good communication, reporting and presentation skills
  • Ability to work on their own or as part of a small team
  • Organised and able to plan ahead and meet tight deadlines
  • Flexibility in working times and willingness to travel (both in the UK and abroad)

Desirable skills

  • Ability to speak another European language
  • Membership of conservation NGOs and biological associations
  • Drone pilot qualification/experience
