Closing date: Sunday, 2nd June 2019

APEM Limited is Europe’s largest specialist aquatic science consultancy. We offer our clients an integrated approach to every aspect of the investigation, scientific study and management of freshwater and marine habitats and operate UK wide and internationally. Our consultant scientists are recognised experts in their fields, and as a company we pride ourselves on our commitment to scientific rigour and excellent client service. You have an exciting opportunity to join us.

About the role

APEM has a large and increasing portfolio of projects working with aquatic invasive non-native species (INNS), including monitoring, risk assessment, management and eradication. We wish to consolidate our expertise by appointing an INNS specialist. Leading or providing senior level technical input to a wide range of projects, you will work as part of a team of scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology and environmental management, developing and co-ordinating our INNS work. Typical projects are driven by the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, the Habitats Directive and legislation specific to management of aquatic INNS. Clients may include the UK environment and conservation agencies, the water and energy industries and infrastructure developers.

As this is a new position, it is an opportunity to develop new areas of work and to engage with clients to ensure that we provide the best service possible for their needs.

Our benefits package includes 25 days holiday (increasing to a maximum of 30 days in line with length of service), pension, private medical insurance, health cash plan, group income protection, death in service insurance, cycle to work scheme, company maternity and paternity pay.

About you

We are seeking a senior consultant with specific expertise relevant to freshwater INNS, and ideally with experience across a range of taxonomic groups. You should have at least four years’ relevant professional experience and an MSc or PhD in a relevant subject.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of policy and law covering INNS in the UK and further afield, along with desk or field based experience of INNS monitoring or control. Understanding impacts of INNS on water company operations will be a useful attribute, along with experience designing monitoring and management programmes for INNS and affected ecological communities. Experience in delivering INNS work within commercial consultancy, industry or regulators will be highly desirable.

You will require an ability to work both independently and as a leader of project teams, and in addition to providing specialist technical input, you will be expected to communicate effectively to clients and within multi-disciplinary project teams. You will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a commercial consultancy environment through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally. In addition, although the position is predominantly office based, you should be prepared to travel to attend meetings, site visits and carry out field work across the UK. A valid driving licence is therefore essential, along with excellent report writing and numerical skills and a proven ability to deliver projects on time and within budget. Experience of tendering is also desirable.
