Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme

Interpretation Officer

Starting salary:  £24,353 pro rata Part Time (14 hours per week)

Would you like to be part of a team delivering an exciting programme of heritage projects in the Westmorland Dales? Do you have the range of skills and experience necessary to lead on the delivery of the interpretive elements of the projects and to contribute to the team more generally?

The Westmorland Dales is a beautiful area of Cumbria lying within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is characterised by sweeping views, limestone scars and pavements, species-rich meadows and verges, and a rich cultural landscape that displays evidence of human activity over the last 10,000 years. A £2.27m grant has now been secured from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver the 4-year Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership Scheme, for which Friends of the Lake District is the lead partner. We are recruiting three new posts to the team which will coordinate the Scheme and deliver many of its projects.

The Interpretation Officer will play a key role in the team. He or she will take the lead in delivering the Interpreting the Westmorland Dales project in particular, working closely with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, other partners, consultants, designers, and community groups. In addition they will help to ensure that interpretation is a common thread linking all the various projects together. The interpretation will draw on the interpretive strategy produced during the scheme’s development phase.

The successful candidate will have either a degree in a relevant subject and/or substantive appropriate experience. Essential experience will include producing a range of interpretation in different media aimed at communication with a range of audiences. It will include experience working with community groups and volunteers, in project design and management, in partnerships, and with consultants and contractors. A good knowledge of protected landscapes, the tourism sector and the Westmorland Dales will all be helpful. You will have the ability to work on your own initiative, have well developed verbal and written communications skills, and be able to persuade and influence others. A willingness and ability to work flexible hours is required, including occasional evenings and weekends.

The post is for a four-year period to the end of April 2023. It will be based at Tebay within the scheme area.

Closing date:  9am Thursday 23 May 2019
