Assistant Grower at South Farm

South Farm is a thriving wedding venue on the Cambs / Herts border. Based on a 20 acre old farm site with a beautiful farm house, amazing gardens and lovely listed barns as the primary function rooms. South Farm is one of the country’s leading wedding venues, hosting up to 25,000 guests per year.

South Farm is a fully integrated business, doing all their own catering which is underpinned by the 10-acre organic smallholding (not certified). The smallholding produces about 70% of the fruit and veg used by the kitchen, growing around 150 different varieties in open fields, polytunnels and fruit cages. Additionally, the smallholding has pigs, sheep and chickens.

We are seeking an Assistant Grower to help manage and further develop the smallholding.

Salary and Working hours

Full time, permanent, including some weekend duties on rota; variable through the year depending upon the needs of the garden! Salary will be dependent on experience and living arrangements. £17-20K. On-site accommodation is available.

Main Functions of Assistant Grower

To assist with production on the farm, growing quality fruit and vegetables throughout the year using organic methods. Also assisting with general gardening around the estate and associated site maintenance.

Principal duties and responsibilities with support and training where practical


  • participating in all aspects of production, from propagation through to harvest
  • assisting in monitoring irrigation, ventilation, pest and disease management and composting
  • assisting in planning and implementing development of the site
  • harvesting produce as required by the kitchen
  • maintaining growing spaces and equipment
  • helping to Improve efficiency and growing techniques


  • helping to record crop sales and yields
  • assisting in ordering necessary supplies
  • attending relevant meetings and liaising with other departments on a weekly basis
  • assisting in improving efficiency and growing techniques

Suitable candidates will need fluent English and, in line with the requirements of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK. As part of the recruitment process, you will be asked to provide documented evidence of eligibility.
