Bioscan is one of the UK’s longest established environmental consultancies specialising in applied ecology; we have been delivering independent and highly respected ecological services and advice since 1984.

To help keep pace with a growing project workload we are seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates to join our team with immediate effect. We are looking to fill the position initially on a full time, fixed term contract basis to assist during the busy spring to autumn survey period, and for those that show potential during this period, we are also looking to extend this to a permanent position. The job is based at our offices just south of Oxford but will include a large proportion of time spent in the field assisting with habitat and protected species surveys across the whole of the UK. The nature of the work means that a flexible approach to working hours will be needed as evening and early morning survey work will be required. When not undertaking field work, time at our offices will be spent helping with day-to-day tasks such as analysis of bat survey recordings, desk surveys, data analysis, report writing and production of graphics.

Successful candidates would normally be expected to have the following at minimum:

  • A degree in ecology or relevant subject
  • Past experience working as a field assistant or similar in the public, private or charitable sectors
  • Good written English and IT skills
  • An enthusiasm to learn and keen interest in wildlife
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a small, close knit team
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home
  • Professional, well-organised attitude
  • Full driving licence

The following additional abilities would be highly desirable

  • Experience of undertaking bat transect surveys and identification of bats from handheld detectors and sonograms
  • An ability to identify birds by song and be familiar with the BTO species codes is particularly desirable
  • Protected species’ survey licenses
  • Familiarity with the Phase 1 habitat survey technique
  • Experience in collation of survey data and preparation of reports

Suitable candidates can expect to be offered a competitive salary commensurate with experience and skill set, and room for growth within a small, but highly-respected and long-established practice. You would also be joining a supportive and friendly team based in attractive rural surroundings close to a vibrant University City.
