Walthamstow Wetlands is a free to visit, busy visitor attraction site with up to 10,000 visitors per week during the summer months.

Fully open to the public in 2017, Walthamstow Wetlands is the capital's largest urban wetland nature reserve, providing a special home to many important wildlife species and has already welcomed over half a million visitors. The nature reserve encompasses 10 large reservoirs, which deliver water to 3.5 million Thames Water customers.

Here you can enjoy some peace and quiet, while getting closer to nature and discovering the fascinating history of this unique urban nature reserve. You can also enjoy the hospitality of the café, situated in the Engine House Visitor Centre. For those wishing to run or cycle, we have a dedicated path that allows you to enjoy the nature reserve without disturbing the wildlife.

Walthamstow Wetlands is internationally important for wildlife, especially for migrating waterfowl, which fly many thousands of miles/kilometres to get here. The nature reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest; forms part of the Lee Valley Special Protection Area and is included in The Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. 

It is managed in partnership by London Borough of Waltham Forest (the employer for this post); London Wildlife Trust (LWT )and Thames Water the site owner and operator of the water supply system.

The site benefited from a significant National Lottery Heritage Fund grant in 2017 and runs an extensive Activity Plan (delivered by LWT) due to end in mid-2020 and plans are in preparation for a new operating model post NHLF funding.

About the Role

The postholder is the key operational interface between the partners and is responsible for:

  • ensuring delivery of the strategic aims of the Walthamstow Wetlands
  • leading the LBWF management team, with responsibility for all aspects of the operational management.
  • ensuring effective day to day operational management, safety and excellent customer service.
  • leading development and operational management of the Front of House Team in the Marine Engine House
  • budget setting and monitoring and achieving agreed income targets, including retail and catering.
  • working effectively with partners to maximise the visitor offer and commercial returns.
  • leading on communications with main funder National Lottery Heritage Fund, ensuring reporting & monitoring completed quarterly

About the Ideal Candidate

Applications are welcomed for candidates with one or more of the following Essential backgrounds:

  • experience in managing a busy visitor attraction or similar
  • experience in nature reserve management or similar
  • experience in operational water sites or similar
  • demonstrable commercial approach

Applications are particularly sought from candidates who, in addition to the above, may have further knowledge and experience in :

  • visitor experience management
  • knowledge of events and catering management
  • Contractual and negotiation experience

The post is covering maternity leave and is due to commence in July 2019.

It is a full time (36 hours) post and requires some evening and weekend working on a rota basis

The salary for the post is PO4: circa £39-£42k
