The intergovernmental North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) invites applications for the position of Assistant Secretary based at its Headquarters in Edinburgh. The successful candidate will support the Secretary in all aspects of the international work of the organization and deputising in the absence of the Secretary. This work will include:

  • preparation for and management of intergovernmental meetings;
  • data analysis and preparation of reports and publications;
  • co-ordination of research activities and initiatives, to raise awareness initially under the International Year of the Salmon and the SALSEA – Track programme.

At a minimum, applicants should have a university degree in the biological or environmental sciences, and proven experience in salmon research or conservation or management, or related fields. Excellent diplomatic, team management, organizational and communication skills are also essential. Experience in working with intergovernmental organizations is desirable.

The appointment will be on a four-year contract renewable by mutual consent with an initial probationary period of one year from the date of appointment. A salary of circa £60,000 per annum is offered and the position offers other benefits including certain privileges and immunities linked to NASCO’s intergovernmental status. In addition, a generous package of insurances is offered after successful completion of the probationary period. Some international travel will be required including attendance at NASCO and scientific meetings.
