The Role:

As manager of our Environment Quality Team, you will lead on a variety of strategic pollution issues including, but not limited to, air quality and contaminated land.

Working closely with colleagues from across the Council, you and your team will address air and land quality issues through the planning process and oversee the implementation of various Council Plans and strategies.

You will use your specialist knowledge and experience in land and air quality to ensure the Council’s statutory duties are met and to make improvements and reduce health inequalities across the borough.

Contract, performance and budget monitoring, are also a key feature of this management post.

Please note: Applicants must describe how they meet each section listed in the ‘Selection Criteria/Person Specification’ to be considered further for this post.

About You:

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent).

You must have significant relevant experience at a managerial/supervisory level involving both staff and project management.

You will be excellent at communicating verbally as well as in writing. You must have good listening skills, combined with an ability to adapt your style and approach to understand the perspective of others, and be able to build effective relationships, encourage team effort and motivate staff. You must be able to be clear, competent and articulate and present the full picture without ambiguity or unnecessary detail.

You will also be IT literate with experience of using databases, GIS packages and quantitative risk assessment tools.

Role Requirements:

Organise and manage resources to achieve a high quality service delivery, focused on the needs of the borough’s residents and other customers and to deliver local and national targets.

Establish and maintain good working relationships both within and outside the councils.

Provide Councillors with professional and technical guidance and advice, prepare complex Committee reports and attend meetings of the Regulation and Enforcement Review Committee and the Overview and Scrutiny Committees as required.

Keep fully abreast of all legal and technical developments in the team’s field of expertise and to pro-actively disseminate the information in a usable and digestible form to members of the team and other relevant colleagues.
