WORKING HOURS AND SALARY

Part-time: 2.5 days (18 hours) per week. Working hours are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (including half an hour for lunch) and a short shift (1.5 hours) on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

Salary: £8,424 to £9,828 depending on skills and experience.

About The Sinfield Nature Conservation Trust and White House Farm Nature Reserve

The Sinfield Nature Conservation Trust is a registered charity, established in 1994 to advance the conservation of wildlife and wild places. It owns a 105 acre nature reserve at Hasketon near Woodbridge.

The nature reserve is a hidden haven for wildlife. Varied habitats include meadows and rough grassland, woodland, scrub, and ponds. One of the main attractions at the site is the species-rich wildflower meadows which have spectacular displays of orchids and are managed using traditional practices of hay-making and grazing by the Trust's cattle.

The site is registered organic with the Soil Association. It is bordered by ancient woodland and surrounded by over 20 acres of wide hedgerows and tree corridors. The site supports over 50 bird species.

JOB DETAILS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Practical conservation work: The Nature Reserve Warden will assist the Site Manager to undertake conservation management work set out in the management plan to protect and enhance the nature reserve. You will have practical skills in machine and power tool use. Chainsaw experience with appropriate certification is essential and brushcutter and tractor experience is an advantage. Nature trail checks and maintenance. Some tasks require lifting heavy items (e.g. bags of logs) and you will need a good level of fitness and be able to work through the day in all weathers!

Animal husbandry: You will assist the Site Manager to care for the conservation cattle and other animals. Duties will include feeding, bedding and mucking out of animal housing and prioritising animal welfare. In the event of an animal emergency or welfare issue you would need to prepared to be flexible with working hours.

Biological and general site monitoring: You will carry out scientific monitoring and recording of prioritised flora and fauna surveys, working with established in-house or other monitoring scheme templates.

Visitor infrastructure:  You will assist with installation of any new visitor infrastructure and maintenance of existing infrastructure. You will carry out fencing checks and repair and maintain existing stock proofing.

Working with volunteers: There is no staff management responsibility, but you will have responsibility for organising, managing and leading practical conservation volunteer days including those involving community groups. You will help recruit and manage a team of volunteers ensuring they are well organised and trained to work effectively and safely to achieve planned conservation tasks. You will motivate and encourage volunteers, helping to establish a lasting team for the charity.

Meeting visitors and local community: You will be a welcoming member of the team and engage visitors at the reserve, ensuring they are well informed about the site and the Trust. You will also build links with communities, promoting the connection between nature and wellbeing through volunteering, events and engagement.

Safety at work: You will ensure that you comply with procedures to manage risk to the public, staff and volunteers. You will carry out risk assessments when necessary to ensure that all works by volunteers, staff and contractors conform to Health & Safety Best Practice (i.e. as a minimum are in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974).

Teamwork: You will be an excellent team player, supporting a positive working environment for staff and a welcoming public environment for volunteers and visitors. You will be a supportive and proactive member of the team.

Planning: When working without supervision or on a delegated task you will have the ability to effectively prioritise, organise, plan and schedule activities and resources at a very high standard.

Presentation: You will ensure each task is completed to a high standard, maintaining a presentable site for visitors and you will carry out safety checking and litter collection.

Charity Development: Helping to identify new opportunities for grants and income generation, considering long term sustainability. You will help to engage with corporate groups to encourage support of the charity and this may involve conservation work days.

Campsite (glamping) assistance: During short shifts you will also be representing Secret Meadows which runs the glamping accommodation at the reserve. There will be some Secret Meadows work involved including hot tub safety checks, re-stocking the onsite shop and potentially responding to maintenance issues. This may involve assisting guests so it is important that you are well informed about how the glamping site works and have excellent customer service skills.

Responsibility: You will report to the Site Manager, assisting him with general site management tasks. You will have responsibility for delegated tasks and projects while collaborating with the Site Manager to ensure best practice across the site. You will ensure tasks are prioritised and completed in the correct manner. There will be times when cover is required for the Site Manager and you will be responsible for site management at these times.

COMMUNICATION

Use of digital media: You will manage social media promotion of the reserve, the work activities and the wildlife through social media sites, providing images taken while at work, information and project updates on a weekly basis, in order to encourage appreciation and awareness of the reserve.

Events: You will deliver or take an active role in occasional small events including guided walks to the public as well as volunteers, keeping organisation of events within budget.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • At least one year’s practical experience in relevant land, conservation and access management including skills in hedge cutting, coppicing and general chainsaw use.
  • A qualification in a biological/environmental subject is highly desirable, especially if degree level.
  • A good knowledge of nature conservation management, natural history and field identification skills and recording techniques.
  • Physical fitness and an enthusiasm for outdoor work through the seasons.
  • High self-motivation
  • Experience of working with livestock is preferred
  • A strong commitment to nature conservation
  • An excellent team player willing to learn and adapt
  • Ability to self-manage on set tasks, maintaining high standards
  • An understanding of community working and awareness raising activities
  • Ability to assist with project development
  • Ability to store, maintain and ensure correct use of tools and equipment
  • Experience of leading and managing volunteers
  • Practical skills in machine and power tools with certification for chainsaw and brush cutter.
  • Ability to create rustic wooden benches and similar features for nature trails would be an advantage.
  • Full clean driving licence
  • IT literacy
  • Applicants must demonstrate a mature, professional approach and effective communication skills to interact with colleagues, the public and volunteers, while promoting the importance of nature conservation.

This post is advertised as one part-time job. There is the option of a combined full-time post which includes the role of Campsite Assistant (Glamping). The combined salary for these two positions is £16380 to £18200 for normal working hours of 35 hours per week. Appointment is subject to one month probationary period.

Overtime is not paid, but time may be taken off in lieu after agreement with the Site Manager. Some flexibility with working hours is required to allow for activities such as short guided walks or volunteer work parties on occasional evenings or weekends. The holiday allowance is 14 days a year.
