Devon Wildlife Trust is a successful and dynamic charity with a commercial arm, which includes Devon Wildlife Consultants (DWC). DWC are looking for two Assistant Ecologists with a positive outlook to join our friendly and close-knit team. We have two posts available; one is a full-time permanent post and the other is a part-time (2 to 3 days per week) seasonal role.

This is an excellent opportunity to get your foot in the door with an experienced consultancy and kick start your career in ecological consultancy! Due to the range of work covered by the team, a background in practical habitat creation/land management works is essential.

The assistant ecologist will be expected to, following training:

  • Undertake Extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys of smaller sites, primarily within Devon but occasionally further afield
  • Prepare and check fieldwork material and equipment
  • Assist with bat activity/emergence/dawn re-entry surveys as part of a survey team
  • Undertake a range of practical tasks associated with habitat creation, land management and mitigation works
  • Assist with tender, report and map production, including habitat management plans
  • Assist with analysis of field data including bat call analysis using Kaleidoscope

We are looking for:

  • A degree or similar qualification in an environmental related subject
  • A minimum of six months experience within an ecological consultancy or similar
  • Background in habitat mitigation, farm advice and/or land management schemes
  • Basic botanical skills
  • Have or be eligible for graduate or assistant membership to CIEEM
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle

You must be prepared to be flexible over travel and hours, especially during the May to September survey season when it is a requirement to be available to regularly work in the evenings and early mornings.

We can offer you good terms and conditions, flexible working arrangements and a great office environment. The successful candidate will be joining a team of committed, hardworking and friendly colleagues. This is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career within a leading Devon charity.
